Champions League Draw 2016: Quarter-Final Fixture Schedule and Dates Released

Christopher SimpsonMar 18, 2016

The draw for the 2016 UEFA Champions League quarter-finals was made on Friday, with holders Barcelona set to face La Liga rivals Atletico Madrid.

Manchester City, who have reached this stage for the first time, will face Paris Saint-Germain.

Bayern Munich's reward for their remarkable comeback against Juventus in the round of 16 is a tie with Benfica, while Real Madrid will take on Wolfsburg—also in their first quarter-final appearance.

The first legs will take place on April 5 and 6, while the second legs will be played a week later on April 12 and 13. Here is the full schedule, per the Champions League's official Twitter account:

Barcelona Aiming to Make History

No team has ever defended the European Cup since it was reformatted into the Champions League in 1992. But Barcelona have thus far looked unstoppable, with Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Neymar shining—particularly in the round-of-16 second leg, as all three got on the scoresheet in the 3-1 win over Arsenal.

Against Diego Simeone's Atletico Madrid side, they face a tough challenge. Los Rojiblancos have conceded just three goals in the Champions League this season, and football journalist Rafael Hernandez said the Blaugrana could struggle:

Indeed, the Catalan giants have a surprisingly poor record against Spanish sides in recent times, per OptaJoe:

What will give them encouragement is that in their two meetings in La Liga this season, Barca won 2-1 on both occasions, but Atletico are certainly capable of gaining revenge.

Bayern overcame a stern test in the last round, needing extra time to see off the Bianconeri 6-4 on aggregate after two thrilling legs. They're one of the best teams left in the competition and shouldn't have too many problems against Benfica.

Bleacher Report's Clark Whitney anticipates the Bavarians could struggle in the opening leg but believes they will come back strong in the second to cruise through to the final four:

After Chelsea and Arsenal failed to make the grade against PSG and Barcelona, respectively, City will be England's sole representatives in the competition.

The Premier League will be hoping the Sky Blues can go as far as possible to take advantage of Juve's exit, with England and Italy in close competition in the UEFA coefficient rankings that determine which nations get four Champions League places.

England are narrowly ahead of Italy, and after Juve's exit in the previous round, the Premier League is assured of keeping its fourth spot for at least two more seasons, but City reaching the semi-finals will help keep Serie A at bay.

PSG, who knocked out Chelsea in the round of 16, should prove stern opposition, though. French football writer Andrew Gibney is anticipating a thrilling encounter between the Citizens and Les Parisiens, while fellow writer Robin Bairner believes PSG have the advantage having already sewn up the Ligue 1 title:

It could work in City's favour, though, if the lack of competitive domestic matches causes PSG to switch off somewhat, but there's little chance of manager Laurent Blanc allowing that.

Real Madrid will be hoping to win their record 11th European Cup title this year after wining La Decima in 2014, and at least a semi-final place looks a fairly safe bet against Wolfsburg.

La Liga writer Andrew Gaffney believes Los Blancos can have no excuses not to progress after avoiding the draw's top teams:

They'll need to improve on some poor recent showings in their domestic campaign, but they should have enough quality to progress here.
