World champion Lewis Hamilton topped the timesheets in both practice sessions ahead of the Australian Grand Prix on Friday.

FP2 Recap

Here are the standings from the second practice session:

Mercedes had mixed fortunes in the afternoon's action at the Australian Grand Prix on Friday with Hamilton going fastest but Nico Rosberg crashing.

The rain once again caused problems as it had in the morning's running.

Rosberg fell victim to the wet as he crashed at Turn 6, driving into the wall and losing his front wing, per Formula One:

Meanwhile, Hamilton topped the timesheets, going almost half a second faster than Force India's Nico Hulkenberg in second.

Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen was further back in third while Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo finished fourth.

Raikkonen's team-mate, Sebastian Vettel, finished eighth, almost two seconds down on Hamilton, but it was very difficult to make any definitive judgement on who might prevail come the race because of the wet conditions.

Indeed, no driver was able to do any significant running in the wet, meaning track-time was kept to a minimum.

The hope will be that the conditions improve for the third practice session on Saturday ahead of a crucial qualifying.

FP1 Recap

Here is the classification from the first practice session of the season at the Australian Grand Prix:

World champion Hamilton was fastest in testing conditions on Friday morning.

The Englishman was four-10ths of a second up on second-fastest Daniil Kvyat in the Red Bull, with the Russian's team-mate, Daniel Ricciardo, over a second back in third.

Hamilton took advantage of a small window of dry running in his Mercedes to set the fastest time as the majority of the session was troubled by rain, as noted by Manor Racing:

Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel failed to set a time at all because of the wet conditions.

Carlos Sainz was the only other driver not to complete a timed lap, the Spaniard having suffered from technical problems with his Toro Rosso.

The tricky conditions caused problems for several drivers, with Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen and Toro Rosso's Max Verstappen both spinning in the wet.

Meanwhile, Manor rookie Rio Haryanto ended up in the gravel at one point at Melbourne's Albert Park, and home favourite Ricciardo ran wide before managing to correct himself.

Hamilton's Mercedes team-mate, Nico Rosberg, could only manage sixth fastest, more than two seconds back from his colleague.

Meanwhile, there were encouraging signs for McLaren as Fernando Alonso and Jenson Button finished seventh and eighth, respectively.
