Tottenham vs. Borussia Dortmund: Score, Reaction from 2016 Europa League, Leg 2

James DudkoMar 17, 2016

Borussia Dortmund confirmed an emphatic 5-1 aggregate win over Tottenham Hotspur to reach the UEFA Europa League quarterfinal after winning 2-1 at White Hart Lane on Thursday night.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang got the Dortmund party started with a wonder goal from distance in the first half before adding another after the break to cap a crisp team move. Heung-Min Son got Tottenham's consolation after smartly capitalising on a rare mistake at the back from the Bundesliga club.

Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino left deadly striker Harry Kane on the bench. He also included Ryan Mason in midfield, per the club:

By contrast, Dortmund fielded a strong starting XI, featuring goalscorer Aubameyang and gifted playmaker Henrikh Mkhitaryan, per the club:

It took a fabulous long-range strike to liven up fairly stale opening exchanges. Aubameyang took the ball from nearly 30 yards out and bent it beyond Spurs' talented goalkeeper Hugo Lloris.

BT Sport Football relayed a highlight of the awesome finish:

The goal made the Bundesliga club the joint second-most prolific team on the continent, according to OptaFranz:

Aubameyang's clever moment and cheetah-like pace proved a constant nuisance for Tottenham. The Dortmund front man soon raced behind the Spurs back four when he was quickest to react to a deflection.

Fortunately for the hosts, Toby Alderweireld was on hand to make a last-ditch block. But it wasn't long before the Belgian defender wasted Spurs' best chance of the half when he failed to turn in an Erik Lamela free-kick.

The half ended with Spurs still needing five to go through.

Aubameyang was unusually profligate when he blazed one well over the bar early in the second half. Once again, though, his pace had proved too much for the bewildered Tottenham rearguard.

But the Gabon man soon made amends when he completed a sweeping move described by DW Sports:

It's not surprising Mkhitaryan was the creative force. The Armenian pass-master is a class act and Aubameyang's most effective line of supply.

Squawka confirmed just how generous he is in the final third:

But an errant back pass from Neven Subotic mooted Dortmund's joy, allowing Son to finally open Tottenham's account in the tie. The South Korean is a clever forward who should see more action in the Premier League.

As WhoScored.com noted, the former Leverkusen star Son loves to torment this opposition:

But there were no more slips from the confident visitors, who booked their passage with ease over the two games.

Post-Match Reaction

Dortmund boss Thomas Tuchel had no doubt that his team deserved to go through. He was especially pleased with the attitude his players showed on English shores, per the Bundesliga's official site:

"

You need a certain attitude if you want to win away in England. It takes a special performance and a special mentality. We had both. Over both legs, and especially again today. The will to win again was really noticeable. We deserved it, it's a magnificent feeling.

"

Tuchel thinks his side's appetite for glory is obvious, per Dortmund:

As for Pochettino, he's rightly trying to quickly readjust Tottenham's attentions back to the Premier League title race, specifically focusing on the forthcoming home game against Bournemouth, per Spurs:

Ultimately, Dortmund have merely confirmed what most observers likely already thought: They are the class of this tournament.

But for Spurs, being brushed aside so easily during a season when they are viable as potential champions of England proves that no matter what happens domestically, Pochettino still has work to do with this squad.
