Champions League Results 2016: Qualified Teams After Wednesday Round-of-16 Games

Christopher SimpsonMar 16, 2016

Barcelona and Bayern Munich completed the lineup for the final eight teams in the UEFA Champions League as they saw off Arsenal and Juventus in thrilling fashion on Wednesday.

Bayern overcame an outstanding Juve side at the Allianz Arena, with the Bianconeri taking a 2-0 lead before the Bundesliga side pulled level to force extra time. The Bavarians ultimately had the most left in the tank and scored twice more to win 4-2 on the night and 6-4 on aggregate.

Meanwhile, the Blaugrana beat Arsenal 3-1 with each of their attacking trident getting on the scoresheet to claim their tie 5-1 overall.

Wednesday Recap

Barcelona enjoyed a typically positive start against the Gunners, who looked to get forward as well but knew that conceding a single goal would likely be enough to kill off the tie.

The hosts almost got that goal after 17 minutes when Neymar picked out Lionel Messi with an exquisite aerial through ball, but David Ospina made an outstanding stop as Spanish football experts Sergi Dominguez and Dermot Corrigan noted:

Neymar broke the deadlock immediately after, though, tucking home one-on-one after being expertly found by Luis Suarez, per BT Sport Football:

The Brazilian loves playing at the Camp Nou, as Squawka Football revealed:

Arsenal responded to the setback with renewed vigour and should have scored through Alexis Sanchez when Hector Bellerin picked him out with an excellent cross, but the Chilean could only glance his header wide.

The Gunners were able to find the net early in the second half—and in some style thanks to Mohamed Elneny's marvellous strike from the edge of the area, per BT Sport Football:

Arsenal threatened to bag a second as they got forward through Danny Welbeck, but Suarez soon ended any hopes of a comeback when he acrobatically volleyed home Dani Alves' cross, per BT Sport Football:

To their credit, Arsenal refused to give up despite the hopelessness of their situation, but Messi finished the game off once and for all in the 88th minute when he pounced on a loose ball and chipped it over Ospina.

No team in the Champions League era has ever defended its title, but the Catalan giants could be on the verge of history here.

Paul Pogba got the Bianconeri off to the perfect start in Munich when he capitalised on mistakes from David Alaba and Manuel Neuer.

The former miscontrolled a long pass forward from Sami Khedira, and in charging down Stephan Lichtsteiner after he latched onto the ball, Neuer deflected the ball straight to the Frenchman, and he coolly picked out the gap between Xabi Alonso and Joshua Kimmich to roll it into the empty net.

Normally so calm and collected, Pep Guardiola's side struggled to handle Juve's relentless pressing and desire to break forward at every opportunity.

Bundesliga expert Stefan Bienkowski noted how disorganised they appeared, while Italian football writer Adam Digby hailed Pogba and Alvaro Morata:

Morata was unfortunate not to make it 2-0 when he lifted the ball over Neuer after another mistake from the German, but he was incorrectly ruled offside.

The Spaniard played a key role in the Old Lady taking the lead after 27 minutes, though, when he picked up the ball in his own half before embarking on a remarkable run. After beating no fewer than four Bavarian players, he laid the ball off for Juan Cuadrado, and the Colombian finished in style, per BT Sport Football:

In the second half, Bayern were finally able to pin Juventus back in their own area, and two headers from excellent balls into the box turned the game on its head.

The first came from Robert Lewandowski as Douglas Costa whipped a brilliant ball in, per FC Bayern English:

In injury time, Bayern repeated the tactic, this time with Thomas Muller heading in from Juve loanee Kingsley Coman.

The hosts went ahead for the first time on the night midway through extra time, when substitute Thiago Alcantara played a lovely one-two with Muller to evade the Bianconeri defence and slotted the ball past Gianluigi Buffon.

Just two minutes later, Coman produced yet another moment of magic in the game with an exceptional solo effort, per BT Sport Football:

As Bienkowski and Bleacher Report's own Clark Whitney noted, Juventus were visibly exhausted by their exertions by then:

There would be no more goals, though, and Bayern will progress to the next round.

The Bavarians have knocked out one of the toughest teams left in the competition and will hope to turn the resilience they've shown here into European glory before Pep Guardiola heads to Manchester City.

However, if they produce their first-half display against a team with the attacking quality of Barcelona or Real Madrid, their hopes will surely come crashing to a halt.
