Champions League Results 2016: Qualified Teams After Tuesday Round-of-16 Games

Tom SunderlandMar 15, 2016

Atletico Madrid laboured to a penalty-shootout win over PSV Eindhoven on Tuesday, booking their place in the Champions League quarter-finals alongside Manchester City, who defeated Dynamo Kiev on aggregate to advance.

Los Rojiblancos ran to a second 0-0 stalemate against PSV, but manager Diego Simeone's side emerged as 8-7 victors in the shootout, where Luciano Narsingh's miss meant an emotional exit for the visitors.

Manchester City also saw out a scoreless 90 minutes on Tuesday, but that was enough for the Premier League giants to advance thanks to their 3-1 triumph in the first leg. It wasn't all good news for the Citizens, though, after captain Vincent Kompany and Nicolas Otamendi suffered early injuries.

They join Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain, Benfica and Wolfsburg in the last eight of this year's European contest, with only two places left to fight for as the competition boils down to its most intense phases.

Of Tuesday's two scoreless affairs, Atletico's stalemate against PSV was certainly the more surprising, as Simeone's men were taken to penalties following a 0-0 draw across the two legs.

PSV almost took a lead near the half-hour mark following a breakdown their right flank, but Atleti goalkeeper Jan Oblak was equal to the threat and intercepted low to stop a drilled ball finding its way across his goal. The Dutch visitors more than held their own in the first period, according to ESPN FC's Dermot Corrigan:

But for all their resilience, finding the target was proving a tough task for manager Phillip Cocu's side, according to OptaJean:

Jurgen Locadia almost put the guests ahead just before the hour mark. But Oblak tipped his rasping effort onto the post, and Luuk de Jong was unable to divert the resulting rebound past Atleti's recovering defenders.

Substitute Fernando Torres almost found the breakthrough after squirming his way down the left side of PSV's box, but PSV stopper Jeroen Zoet deflected his shot off the woodwork with five minutes remaining. German outlet DW Sports highlighted just how much pressure the hosts had applied on the opposition goal before going to extra time with the fixture still scoreless:

The shot counter continued to rise in Atletico's favour during extra time, but despite their registering 25 shots on goal at the end of the 120 minutes, per WhoScored.com, the deadlock remained intact heading to penalties.

BT Sport Football confirmed that by failing to find the back of the net, Atletico and PSV had clinched an unenviable record in the process:

Atletico and PSV traded blows in a bid to see who would blink first, and each team kept their nerve by dispatching seven penalties before late substitute Narsingh hit the woodwork.

Juanfran stepped up to seal the closely fought win for Atleti that, although far closer than they might have hoped, will be savoured as no less sweet a win as they progress into the last eight.

Manchester City 0-0 Dynamo Kiev

MANCHESTER, ENGLAND - MARCH 15: An injured Vincent Kompany of Manchester City (4) in discussion with team mates Pablo Zabaleta (L) and Joe Hart (R) during the UEFA Champions League round of 16 second leg match between Manchester City FC and FC Dynamo Ky

Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini may have been pleased to see his side book a Champions League quarter-final spot for the first time in their history on Tuesday, but it came at a price.

Defensive disaster struck City early on against Dynamo after first-choice centre-backs Kompany and Otamendi were replaced by Eliaquim Mangala and Martin Demichelis inside 24 minutes. The double blow is poorly timed with a Manchester derby just days away too, noted bet365:

Those casualties gave Dynamo more room to manoeuvre in attack, but both teams struggled to pose much of a threat on goal, with the Citizens eager to defend their aggregate lead and Dynamo fearful of falling further behind.

OptaJoe provided evidence as to just how stale Wednesday's clash had become, with Jesus Navas' thudded effort against the woodwork being as close as the hosts came to a breakthrough:

Manchester City appeared happy to make it to the full-time whistle scoreless, but the Ukrainian visitors could feel disappointed with the limp fashion in which their Champions League challenge simmered to a close.

With Chelsea exiting at the hands of PSG last week and Arsenal's chances of beating Barcelona on Wednesday looking slim, Manchester City could stand proudly as the only English team to make this year's quarters.
