B/R Recruiting Notebook: 5-Star OT Weighing Options; 4-Star WR Sets Pac-12 Stops

Damon SaylesMar 21, 2016

March Madness may have the country buzzing, but the interest of college football recruiting still holds a strong place in the hearts of many—particularly coaches hoping to land the biggest fish in the 2017 class.

There are several athletes using this time to finalize their spring schedules and/or weigh the multiple options in front of them. Here are some updates from a few of the top 2017 athletes nationwide.

5-star OT Wills taking his time with multiple offers

Lately, the only thing that's been able to stop Lexington, Kentucky, offensive lineman Jedrick Wills is his own set of teeth.

Wills is recovering from having his wisdom teeth pulled Friday. But aside from that, the 5-star recruit—the nation's No. 8 offensive tackle and No. 30 overall player in the 2017 class—has had much to cheer about, particularly with recruiting. Wills has nearly 20 reported offers, including Alabama, Ohio State, Georgia, Florida State, Notre Dame and home state Kentucky, among others.

Wills, the top-ranked player in the state of Kentucky, said he is sold on taking things slowly with his recruitment. He's currently focusing on improving at the tackle position but said he's now beginning to prepare for upcoming unofficial visits during the spring and summer. As for his national and state ranking, Wills said it's something that keeps him motivated.

"Even though I do have five stars, I've realized that the privilege can be taken away at any moment," Wills said. "I need to continue to grind, like I have none [zero stars]."

At 6'5", 315 pounds, Wills is a lineman with good size and an ability to finish plays. He's an athlete who could see early playing time by moving to a guard position if necessary, even though he's expected to be a premier tackle at the next level.

As for spring plans, Wills said he is still undecided but should have visits finalized soon.

"I'm not 100 percent sure where I'm visiting yet. [I'm] letting all the invites to campuses come in and then going to plan with my family from there," he said.

Jamire Calvin

Trips to Pac-12 schools on deck for 3-star WR Calvin

Two Pac-12 foes will have their chance to impress Los Angeles 3-star wide receiver Jamire Calvin this weekend.

Calvin said he is gearing up for unofficial visits to both Arizona and Arizona State. The Cathedral High School standout has nearly 20 reported offers, but Arizona and Arizona State aren't on that list for the time being. That could change by Sunday night.

In the meantime, Calvin said he'll continue to enjoy the process and the opportunities that come with it.

"It's been crazy; I was not expecting to have 20-plus offers, but it's a great feeling," Calvin said. "At the same time, it can be stressful. It's hard making a decision, especially when it seems every week, you're getting a new offer. But it's always a blessing and a humbling thing.

"It's a once-in-a-lifetime thing, so I've got to make the best of it."

Calvin said that, in addition to Arizona and Arizona State, he's hoping to take a few visits during the spring, including Nebraska, Cal, Texas A&M, Tennessee, Colorado, Penn State and Oregon State. Calvin added that he's looking to visit Maryland on April 23.

"I'm looking for a second home," Calvin said. "[I want] a place where I can have real genuine coaches and a place that can help me get to the next level."

WR Reagor adds 2 SEC offers, now has 16 total

March has been a very interesting month for Waxahachie, Texas, 4-star wide receiver Jalen Reagor. After being committed to Texas Tech for three months, he decided to reopen his process a day after picking up back-to-back offers from Alabama and Oklahoma.

Reagor, the son of former Texas Tech and NFL defensive tackle Montae Reagor, added SEC offers from Tennessee and Ole Miss on Sunday. Since decommitting, Reagor also has added offers from Oregon and Mississippi State.

"Everything's been going smooth," said Reagor, who has 16 reported offers. "When I first committed, my dad thought I might have rushed into it. I think I'm right where I need to be now."

Reagor said that although he decommitted, Texas Tech is still very high on his list. He's heard the stories from his father about Texas Tech being a great program, and he likes how Lubbock, Texas, has a solid college environment. Reagor also is a fan of head coach Kliff Kingsbury and his staff.

Don't look for Reagor to commit anytime soon, however. He said he'll look to make a final decision either by the end of his senior season or on national signing day.

For now, Reagor is focused on his upcoming visits. He said he will visit Oklahoma on Friday and will try to visit Oklahoma State on Saturday. Reagor also will be at Texas A&M's "Friday Night Lights" practice on April 1. He added that he's hoping to take additional visits to Alabama, Tennessee and Texas Tech during the spring, all in an effort to find the right fit for him.

"The coaching...that's what I'm looking for," Reagor said. "The coaching and the overall environment have to be right for me."

D'Andre Swift

For top APB Swift, spring's a time to show versatility

Philadelphia 4-star standout D'Andre Swift is doing his part to remain the nation's top-ranked all-purpose back in the 2017 class. Now that he's completed the indoor track season, he's preparing for offseason football and all that comes with it.

Swift said the spring season is the perfect time for him to truly showcase his versatility. The 5'9", 204-pound athlete is a solid rusher, but he's also an outstanding pass-catching option. Swift wants to show why he's ranked No. 32 overall and the top dog at his position and in his state.

"I want to show my speed and show all my styles of play," Swift said. "I've been working with the receivers at my school. I want to show what I can do at slot [receiver]. I can play DB if I have to. I can return kicks. I just want to show I can do it all."

Swift has 25 reported offers, but he said he isn't in any rush to make any decisions. He has offers from Penn State, Michigan, Florida State, Alabama, Clemson, LSU and others. Swift has indicated that he wouldn't mind playing out of state, as he would like to see what life is like outside of Philadelphia.

"I want a great program where I can learn a lot more about football in itself," Swift said. "I want to be somewhere that's a home away from home, and I want to be a part of something special."

CB Vincent getting advice from cousin, 2016 signee

Port Arthur, Texas, 4-star cornerback Kary Vincent Jr. knows a thing or two about the recruiting process from family members. His father is former Texas A&M receiver Kary Vincent, and his second cousin—who he also considers his best friend—is 2016 all-purpose back and Baylor signee Kameron Martin.

As Vincent, a 5'11", 170-pound cornerback, continues his recruiting process—one that includes 18 reported offers—he said he's relying on the advice of Martin, who had nearly 30 offers and committed to Baylor back in July 2014, 19 months before ultimately signing a national letter of intent.

"[Martin] actually told me to just enjoy the process and not rush to make a commitment," Vincent said. "Once you make a decision, you should stay true to it, and that's what I'm planning on doing. When I do eventually cut my schools down, I plan on sticking with one school."

Vincent's focus currently is on track and field, as he's a member of Memorial High School's three relay teams. He's the anchor for the 4x100- and 4x200-meter relays, and he's the third leg of the 4x400 team.

Vincent said he is contemplating taking a visit to Oklahoma with Marvin Wilson, the nation's top-ranked defensive tackle in the 2017 class, for the Sooners' spring game on April 9, but nothing is set in stone. Vincent has an Oklahoma offer, along with offers from Ohio State, Baylor, TCU, Texas, Michigan and a host of other schools. One school, however, that hasn't offered yet is his father's alma mater, Texas A&M.

Every offer Vincent has, he said, is being considered, and he said he'll look to begin narrowing his choices during the summer.

"First, I'm looking for a school that best fits my academic career," said Vincent, who wants to major in communications. "Academics is very important; I understand football won't last forever. For football, I'm trying to make an impact early on a team. I'm also looking for mentors to help me better myself on the field and off the field."
