Atletico Madrid vs. PSV Eindhoven: Winners and Losers from Champions League

Karl MatchettMar 15, 2016

Atletico Madrid and PSV Eindhoven went the distance in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday night as they drew 0-0 after 90 minutes, forcing extra time, before Atletico finally emerged triumphant on the penalty shootout, 8-7.

Both teams had chances during the game, with Antoine Griezmann, Jose Maria Gimenez and Jurgen Locadia all having opportunities to open the scoring. The 90 minutes were frantic and entertaining, while extra time was more reserved from both teams as they sought not to go out late in the game, despite Atletico having by far the more possession and moments of danger.

Here are the winners and losers from the match at the Vicente Calderon.

Winner: Jan Oblak

1 of 5

A 0-0 score can go either way—dull and uninspiring or exciting with at least one of the goalkeepers being in inspired form.

The home goalkeeper certainly was: Jan Oblak and Atletico Madrid have the best defensive record in any of the top European leagues this season, and it's with good reason. He was consistently alert and confident with his handling from high balls into the box and set pieces, while his distribution was accurate and fast too.

Oblak also came up with three critical interventions of a more spectacular nature too, most notably when he made a superb fingertip save onto the post to deny Jurgen Locadia.

Winner: Jeroen Zoet

2 of 5

Oblak was exceptional, but it was the same at the other end: Jeroen Zoet was fantastic for PSV and was certainly a reason that they managed to take the tie the distance.

In the first half he made two tremendous saves from close-range Griezmann efforts. More than once, he was also quick off his line to deny the likes of Yannick Carrasco and Koke, who were running through on goal.

Zoet didn't get to save any of the penalties, but he came mightily close to stopping Saul's.

Loser: Luciano Narsingh

3 of 5

He played three minutes, and he's our only loser—it's harsh, but someone had to emerge as the villain of the tie, and that role fell to Luciano Narsingh.

Phillip Cocu brought him on after 117 minutes for Luuk de Jong, who had missed two of his previous three penalties, according to BT Sport, and Narsingh had no time whatsoever to get on the ball or get involved.

He stepped up to take the eighth penalty for PSV...and hit the crossbar. He was the only one of 16 penalty-takers who failed to score. The tie was so closely fought, and the tactics from both sides were good, so we don't find it easy to pick any loser at all, but ultimately Narsingh's effort decided the outcome.

Winner: Gabi

4 of 5

It was a captain's performance from Gabi, who was tremendous throughout the match.

Both in defensive and offensive capacities, the Atletico midfielder was fantastic in both halves, surging forward and looking to cross from the right channel when he could. He also constantly tracked across the width of the pitch to make big challenges and win back possession.

His penalty in the shootout was consummately struck away, and few on the pitch got through as much positive work for their side as Gabi did for Los Rojiblancos.

Winner: Jeffrey Bruma

5 of 5

Any of the PSV defenders could have been in line, but Jeffrey Bruma maybe gets the edge for his excellent concentration and reading of the game.

He was constantly in place to run behind his fellow centre-backs and be the second man across to clear the ball or make the challenge, right when it seemed Atletico had finally found a way through the packed back line.

Bruma was hugely consistent and reliable throughout and was a big reason why PSV kept a clean sheet—and he was another who netted a great penalty.
