Barcelona vs. Getafe: Score, Reaction from 2016 La Liga Match

James DudkoMar 12, 2016

Lionel Messi scored to help Barcelona extend their lead at the top of La Liga to 11 points after a 6-0 win over Getafe at the Camp Nou on Saturday.

Messi also provided a hat-trick of assists for the first time in La Liga on an eventful day that included him having a penalty saved early in the first half.

Teenage forward Munir El Haddadi also got on the scoresheet, while a brace from Neymar, an Arda Turan wonderstrike and a Juan Rodriguez own goal accounted for the rout, as the reigning champions ran riot. Barcelona were so impressive they didn't even need to feature 26-goal striker Luis Suarez.

Barca manager Luis Enrique sprung a surprise by leaving Suarez on the bench, per the club:

Meanwhile, as they often do, Getafe looked to skipper Pedro Leon for inspiration, per the club:

But the only inspiration came from the home side, as it took less than 10 minutes for Barca to open their account. A slick exchange between Messi and left-back Jordi Alba let the latter whip a dangerous cross into the box that Getafe's Rodriguez bungled into his own net.

Neymar then won the hosts a penalty after drawing a foul from Emiliano Velazquez. Yet, Messi couldn't convert from the spot, instead seeing his attempt well saved.

ESPN's James Tyler praised one commentator's interpretation of the wasted chance:

As if to underline the miss, Sky Sports Statto provided a reminder of Messi and Barca's suspect track record from the spot this season:

ESPN's Dermot Corrigan put that unwanted record into even more chastening perspective:

Clearly still irked by his miss, Messi soon ballooned the sort of promising free-kick he usually makes look so easy to convert.

The No. 10 needed some luck to go his way and duly got it when his mishit shot drifted invitingly for Munir to head home and double Barca's lead.

BeIN Sports' Andres Cordero noted how prolific Munir has been recently:

Messi was again the source of supply when Neymar put Barcelona three up. The former's through pass split the centre-back and full-back, giving Neymar time to run on and calmly side-foot the finish home.

As OptaJose pointed out, the third assist gave Messi a first in domestic action:

Sky Sports Statto also put Neymar's prolific start to his La Liga career into impressive context:

There was still time before the break for Messi to net his goal, which came via a fierce low drive off his left foot.

Messi didn't take long to light up the second half, putting Neymar through again for the Brazilian to make it five for the hosts. Turan then made it six just before the hour mark when he produced an acrobatic overhead kick to convert.

Spanish publication AS relayed an image of the outlandish finish:

ESPN's Miguel Delaney took a moment to highlight Barca's stunning scoring form this season:

Post-Match Reaction

Getafe boss Fran Escriba felt his team had no chance from the start, per Corrigan:

Interestingly, Escriba was dismissive about two thirds of Barca's team, highlighting instead the quality in forward areas as the difference:

As for Enrique, he didn't chide Getafe's poor showing, but focused instead on his own team's quality, per the club's official site:

Meanwhile, centre-back Gerard Pique had a word of caution about the team's issues from the spot, calling on his mates to address the problem before more significant fixtures:

Perhaps the most ominously impressive aspect of this hammering was that it occurred without key striker Suarez. A full-strength Barca have to be considered strong candidates to repeat last season's treble, starting with retaining the league title.

Second-placed Atletico Madrid now know anything less than a win over Deportivo La Coruna later will leave them facing a double-digit points deficit that will surely be too much to overcome in this one-sided title race.
