Danish Footballer Quits Team After Learning Team-Mate Was Dating His Wife

Joe GallagherMar 11, 2016

This is one of the more bizarre reasons we've heard for a footballer quitting his club.

Jonas Borring, a midfielder at Randers FC in the Danish Superliga, has refused to play on the same team as his captain, Christian Keller, after learning that he had started to date his estranged wife Kira.

Confused? The 31-year-old told Ekstra Bladet (h/t WorldSoccer.com) that:

"

Kira decided in late 2015 that she would not be with me anymore and we are separating.

We live, however, still under the same roof and have two children to take into account here. We are basically still husband and wife.

That she chooses to do this impacts us greatly. And it makes the situation untenable at Randers FC between Keller and me.

Keller has broken rule number one in the dressing room. He has completely stabbed me in the back.

"

Borring has been sent on indefinite compassionate leave by the club, and sporting manager Ole Nielsen said: "We have great sympathy for his situation, and that he now needs some peace and quiet."

Updates from Thursday, March 24

Borring later announced that, as much as he wanted to return to the club, he decided the emotional turmoil was too much to return.

As per The Guardian

"

After long considerations and an emotionally difficult time I really wanted to return but considering the circumstances I found that impossible to do.

Randers is a club that has meant a lot to me and it will be very difficult to leave the fans who have given me so much support and been part of my success.

Randers will always have a special place in my heart and I have received so much sympathy and support recently and I will never forget that.

I will not start a new adventure in football.

"

As for Keller, he said that the team would miss a "good player" who would miss the team, but, "We won't stop playing football just because a player leaves us.
