Twitter Reacts as Borussia Dortmund Thrash Under-Strength Tottenham Side
Borussia Dortmund all but secured their place in the quarter-finals of the UEFA Europa League on Thursday with a 3-0 first-leg win over Tottenham Hotspur at the Westfalenstadion.
It promised to be a difficult night from the start for Spurs as manager Mauricio Pochettino named a weakened side:
"Big call from Pochettino to make so many changes away from home.

Dortmund, meanwhile, were protecting an impressive home record:

The German side started well and even had an early Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang goal ruled out for offside:
"Bordering on blistering this from Dortmund. Five good chances in the first 15 minutes, and Mkhitaryan bristling. Real test for Spurs.

But the in-form striker wasn't to be denied for long, as he rose well to head Marcel Schmelzer's cross into the bottom corner:
"Poor marking by #thfc but good movement and a great header from Aubameyang #bvb

"Aubameyang, that's exactly how I head a ball in front of goal too. Down but also into the corner. Power *and* placement

"Speaking of sting...that's a superb header from Aubameyang. Sudden little change in tempo and Dortmund lead.
— Rory Smith (@RorySmithTimes) March 10, 2016"
The Tottenham reserves were struggling:
"Spurs fans prepare to commence operation 'we're glad we're getting knocked out so we can concentrate on the league'.

"37 - Tottenham's only shot on target in the first half v Dortmund came after 37 seconds. Overawed.

The second half continued much like the first, with only the post denying Dortmund a second:

Pochettino's team selection was attracting plenty of criticism:
"Look, Pochettino's starting lineup is understandable. But a hammering in Dortmund is going to damage their title hopes more than any injury.

It was another sombre night for an English club in Europe:
"Coefficient will soon rear its head if teams keep putting weak EL teams out and don’t make a dent in CL.
— Stan Collymore (@StanCollymore) March 10, 2016"
English EL snobbery worrying.
"English clubs should form a separate competition from these difficult European tournaments. They could call it the "Premier League."
