Tom WebbMar 9, 2016

Paris Saint-Germain qualified for the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday with a 2-1 win over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, earning them a 4-2 aggregate victory.

Prior to kick-off, the Parisians' narrow first-leg lead made the contest too close to call:

"

Fancy Chelsea to go through - 3-1

OK everyone, predictions? I am saying 1-1. PSG to go through. #CHEPSG #UCL

— Jonathan Johnson (@Jon_LeGossip) March 9, 2016"
"

Fancy Chelsea to go through. PSG looked a bit flat of late.

— Miguel Delaney (@MiguelDelaney) March 9, 2016"

It was the home side that started the better, Diego Costa threatening after being identified as a fraud by the French champions' social media in the build-up to the match:

"

COSTA IS SO UP FOR THIS

— ㅤ (@TheChelsEra) March 9, 2016"
"

Not a bad start from Chelsea. They have actually got the first shot on goal, Diego Costa looks really fired up for this match, it seems.

— NM (@ffsRooney) March 9, 2016"
"

Give it to Costa! He's up for this! #CFC

— Steven (@stebriscoecfc) March 9, 2016"

PSG hit back with chances of their own:

"

Kenedy given the eyes by Lucas there. Di Maria's shot was going wide but Ivanovic might have to do a few of those clearances #cfc #psg

— Liam Twomey (@liam_twomey) March 9, 2016"
"

GOA.... flag up as Zlatan thought he'd got an early goal! #CHEPSG pic.twitter.com/aA3b4ZVFFg

— Unibet (@unibet) March 9, 2016"
"

Ibrahimovic has the ball in the net but is clearly offside. Home fans politely let visiting fans know the goal won't count.

— Sam Borden (@SamBorden) March 9, 2016"
"

"Zlatan Ibrahimovic, your nose is offside!" sing the Chelsea fans.

— Tom Williams (@tomwfootball) March 9, 2016"

And they extended their aggregate advantage after 16 minutes when Zlatan Ibrahimovic's cross found Adrien Rabiot:

"

Oh dear. PSG 1-0 up at Chelsea (3-1 agg). Di Maria given time to pick his pass, Ibrahimovic cross, Rabiot tap-in. 15 mins gone

"

Kenedy not wide enough or Hazard not deep enough, was always going to be a problem

— Jack Rathborn (@JackRathborn) March 9, 2016"

Chelsea responded in kind, Costa scoring to keep the Premier League side in touch:

"

Chelsea 1-1 PSG (⚽️—‘Fraud’) https://t.co/dgdidg3Bn0

— Bleacher Report UK (@br_uk) March 9, 2016"
"

Spot the goal. Diego Costa strikes. Great response from #cfc. Willian to Pedro to Willian to Costa, turns Thiago Silva, scores.

— Henry Winter (@henrywinter) March 9, 2016"
"

That didn't look like a fraud to me #CHEPSG

That goal lifted the Blues, who finished the first half by far the stronger:

"

Perfectly poised at ht. #PSG have the better individuals, but #cfc's spirit is superb and they finished the first half on top.

— Matt Hughes (@MattHughesTimes) March 9, 2016"
"

This is intense. If CFC keep up the pressing & tackles they can win this. Absolutely brilliant game#CHEPSG

— Omid Djalili (@omid9) March 9, 2016"

Eden Hazard drew the ire of of some Chelsea fans with a half-time shirt-exchange with Angel di Maria.

"

Hazard swapped his shirt at half time with Di Maria!
Should he be doing this??pic.twitter.com/ACTe15VDb5

— Football Accumulator (@footballacca) March 9, 2016"

Guus Hiddink downplayed the move in the game's aftermath.

"

Hididink on Hazard-Di Maria halftime shirt swapping: "It should not be done ... But it's not a big issue"

— Rob Harris (@RobHarris) March 9, 2016"

The second period picked up where the first left off, Blaise Matuidi in particular struggling to contain the Chelsea attacks:

"

Matuidi has committed three bookable offences.

— John Cross (@johncrossmirror) March 9, 2016"
"

Blaise Matuidi appears to be in possession of the Barcelona Get Out Of Jail Free card tonight.

— Dan Levene (@danlevene) March 9, 2016"

Then a pivotal moment: PSG tormentor-in-chief Costa went down injured and was promptly replaced by Bertrand Traore:

"

Costa coming off - huge blow for #cfc

— Matt Hughes (@MattHughesTimes) March 9, 2016"
"

It's Costa coming off. Traore's made his mark in recent weeks - anything similar tonight and he'll be in the stratosphere.

— Garry Hayes (@garryhayes) March 9, 2016"
"

Script written for Bertrand Traore? Such a talent. Wouldn't be surprised if he wins African footballer of the year one day. #CHEPSG

— John Bennett (@JohnBennettBBC) March 9, 2016"

Within minutes, the visitors scored again, Thiago Motta finding Angel Di Maria, whose left-wing cross found Ibrahimovic unmarked in the middle:

"

— Bleacher Report UK (@br_uk) March 9, 2016"
"

2-1 PSG. Motta to Di Maria, whose fine cross is volleyed in emphatically by Ibrahimovic. 4-2 on aggregate. That may be that.

— Tom Williams (@tomwfootball) March 9, 2016"
"

Zlat's all folks! #CHEPSG

— Chris Charles (@chrischarles101) March 9, 2016"
"

Game over, pack away.

— Miguel Delaney (@MiguelDelaney) March 9, 2016"

Things got worse still for Chelsea when Eden Hazard limped off:

"

Eden Hazard asks to be taken off and then walks straight down the tunnel. More bad news for Chelsea ahead of Everton FA Cup tie.

— Tom Williams (@tomwfootball) March 9, 2016"
"

And now we reach the part of the game where Hazard wants to go off

— Mark Jones (@Mark_Jones86) March 9, 2016"
"

Eden Hazard goes off. The next match - that's the one where he'll come good again.

— Paddy Power (@paddypower) March 9, 2016"

It all proved too much for Chelsea, who rarely threatened from thereon and succumbed to Laurent Blanc's side for the second season in a row:

"

So long, Chelsea. pic.twitter.com/ksWvgZsFjk

— Bleacher Report UK (@br_uk) March 9, 2016"
"

So, next season, for the first time in the 13-year Roman Abramovich era, there will be no Champions League football for Chelsea #CHEPSG

— Rob Maul (@Rob_Maul) March 9, 2016"
"

An apt stadium song, 'You can make me whole again' by Atomic Kitten rings around Stamford Bridge. Christ.
