UEFA Youth League Results 2015-16: PSG vs. Roma Quarter-Final Score, Recap

Gianni VerschuerenMar 9, 2016

Paris Saint-Germain beat AS Roma 3-1 in the quarter-finals of the 2015-16 UEFA Youth League on Wednesday, joining Real Madrid and Anderlecht in the semi-finals of this year's tournament.

Fode Toure and Yakou Meite gave PSG a lead in the first half, but the hosts missed a number of chances to end the tie after the break and found themselves under pressure when Marco Tumminello reduced the deficit to a single goal with 15 minutes left to play.

Christopher Nkunku finished the tie with a fantastic free-kick just before the final whistle, however, sending PSG through to the semi-finals. Chelsea and Ajax will contest the last remaining quarter-final on Tuesday, March 15.

PSG were the favourites entering the match and pushed forward from the opening minute, finding lots of success out wide through tricky winger Meite. A barrage of corners came to nothing, while Roma tried to force the action on the counter attack but mostly stuck to defending.

Goalkeeper Lorenzo Crisanto was called into action for the first time after 12 minutes, stopping a shot from Meite, while Lorenzo Vasco provided the first real chance for the visitors from a free-kick.

Emanuele Spinozzi hit the woodwork as Roma crept closer and closer to a goal, but it was PSG who deservedly took the lead after 26 minutes.

Toure showed good patience while Roma tried to clear a set piece, and the ball eventually fell kindly to the defender. This fan shared footage of the goal:

The lead didn't stop PSG from attacking, as Les Parisiens continued to surge up the pitch in an attempt to double their tally before half-time. Crisanto again denied Meite, who was by far the main danger man before the break, and he finally found his goal just a few minutes before half-time.

Yohan Demoncy bagged his second assist of the match, and the goalscorer timed his run toward the centre perfectly before pushing the ball past Crisanto.

Some minor scuffles saw three players booked in the span of two minutes just before the break, but PSG held on to their lead. Roma's official Twitter account knew the Giallorossi faced an uphill battle after half-time:

Crisanto was put to work early in the second half as Meite continued to trouble the Italian defence, but Roma showed more attacking intent and a willingness to take some risks. Lorenzo Di Livio failed to hit the target from a promising position, but he did better just minutes later, testing PSG goalkeeper Remy Descamps for the first time.

Odsonne Edouard was the next to see a promising chance go to waste, and Lorenzo Callegari really should have put the match away after an hour. From a corner, the PSG star suddenly found himself with the goal at his mercy, but he put the ball too close to Crisanto, who produced a fine save to keep his team in the tie.

PSG were starting to waste too many chances, and Roma sensed they were still in the match as the second half wore on. Christian D'Urso couldn't get the ball past Descamps, but substitute Tumminello found more success, scoring with 15 minutes left to play to reduce the deficit to a single goal.

The team's Twitter account urged the Giallorossi on:

But the goal seemed to wake Les Parisiens up, and rather than defend their lead, they started attacking the Roma goal again, looking to put the match away for good. Meite and Aka Wilfride Kanga had some great opportunities, but it was Nkunku who scored the liberating third goal with a textbook free-kick.

Roma's Twitter knew the match was over:

Edoardo Soleri had one final chance for Roma with a free-kick, but it came to naught, as his side's impressive UEFA Youth League campaign ended in the quarter-finals.

PSG's bid to win the Youth League has been carried by powerful striker Jean-Kevin Augustin at times this season, but in Meite, Les Parisiens seem to have discovered yet another fantastic attacker. Coupled with the playmaking abilities of Demoncy, PSG's strong attack will trouble any team they face, particularly if Augustin is called up for their next match.
