La Liga Results 2016: Scores and Updated Table After Sunday's Week 28 Matches

Gianni VerschuerenMar 6, 2016

Atletico Madrid beat Valencia, 3-1, during Sunday's La Liga action to keep pace with league leaders Barcelona, who easily disposed of Eibar earlier in the day.

Antoine Griezmann gave Atletico an early lead, but Denis Cheryshev restored parity shortly after. In the second half, the visitors went looking for a winner, and they eventually found the breakthrough via Fernando Torres. The returning Yannick Ferreira Carrasco added a third goal, while Aderlan Santos was sent off for Valencia.

Lionel Messi scored twice, and Munir El Haddadi and Luis Suarez were also on point as Barcelona outclassed Eibar, while Athletic Bilbao continued their solid form with a 2-0 win over Sporting Gijon.

Recap

Griezmann opened the score midway through the first half, but on-loan winger Cheryshev equalised for the hosts almost immediately. Per ESPN FC's Dermot Corrigan, the Russia international tends to reserve his goals for big moments:

Both teams showed plenty of attacking intentions in the first half, and both had their chances to add to the score. Paco Alcacer and Cheryshev consistently combined well before the break, while Griezmann proved a handful for the Valencia defence.

Luciano Dario Vietto came close to reclaiming the lead for the visitors after the break, with Diego Alves producing a stunning save to keep his team level, before Torres finally broke the deadlock after 72 minutes.

Per WhoScored.com, the former Liverpool star has been in solid form of late:

Bleacher Report UK couldn't help themselves:

Carrasco finally made his anticipated return to the pitch, and he came close to adding a third goal, firing just wide of the post after a surging run. La Liga expert Sid Lowe was impressed:

He had more luck just a few minutes later, putting the final score on the board right after Santos was sent off for his second bookable offence.

Eibar put together a spirited performance against the league leaders, but Barcelona's sheer class made the difference on Sunday, as the Blaugrana waltzed to a 4-0 win. Munir opened the score early, taking some of the pressure off the Catalan defence, and Messi doubled Barcelona's lead before half-time.

The Blaugrana were far from their best on the back end and gave away a number of chances to their Basque opponents, but Messi's second goal of the afternoon, from the penalty spot, all but ended the contest. Suarez added a fourth goal for good measure.

Corrigan thought Barcelona put together an excellent showing:

So did manager Luis Enrique, per the club's official website:

"

Just the other day we played a spectacular game, especially when we went back and analysed it, and today I think we were even better. We were very solid against a very tough team. We overcame their pressure every time they applied it thanks to how we were able to circulate the ball and our positioning.

It was a complete game.

"

While the title race isn't over yet, it's hard to see how anyone could possibly catch Barcelona at this point. The Catalans have been remarkably consistent all season long and are unlikely to drop many points in their last 10 matches.

Elsewhere, Benat Etxebarria and Oscar de Marcos guided Athletic Bilbao to a 2-0 win over Sporting Gijon, despite a sending off for Aymeric Laporte. Real Betis beat Granada, 2-0, and Real Sociedad and Levante shared the spoils, playing out a 1-1 draw.
