Everett Golson Reportedly Will Throw at Notre Dame's Pro Day

Joe PantornoMar 1, 2016

Former Florida State quarterback and Notre Dame transfer Everett Golson will attend the Fighting Irish's pro day on March 31, according to Irish247.

Golson was not invited to this year's NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis after his lone season at Florida State in which he played in nine games.

Golson was a two-year starter in 2012 and 2014 at Notre Dame, where he threw for 5,850 yards and 52 touchdowns. He did not play in 2013 because he was suspended for the entire season because of academic reasons.

Entering the 2015 season, Golson was forced to compete for first-team reps with Malik Zaire, which helped him make his decision to transfer from the school.

He arrived at Florida State, won the starting job from Sean Maguire and helped the Seminoles start the season with an 8-1 record. But a concussion sidelined him for the remainder of the season, which ended in a loss to Houston in the Peach Bowl.

After not getting an invitation to the combine, Golson had to decide on whether he would attend Florida State's or Notre Dame's pro day, per 247Sports:

"

Obviously I’m a little disappointed. I think I possess the ability to play at the next level. I think I have the ability to compete with a lot of those guys that are going to the NFL combine. For me it’s another thing to kind of shift back to really working on your craft...using that as some type of motivation, maybe, but just really trying to be the best quarterback that I can be, and that’s physically, mentally, everything.

"

Golson is capable of playing in a pro-style offense, but his athleticism gives him a chance to extend plays with his legs. That could be valuable for NFL teams who are interested in Golson, but his arm needs to be up to professional standards.

Question marks could arise with Golson due to his past turnover problems. With Florida State, Golson limited his interceptions with just three, but the year before at Notre Dame, he was picked off 14 times. Add that with past concussions, and teams might stay away from him.

As of March 1, Golson is the 21st-ranked quarterback in the 2016 draft class, according to WalterFootball.com, which means that his draft prospects are looking grim. But if he is able to put together a solid showing at Notre Dame's pro day, then his stock could rise a bit before the April selection process.
