EPL Table: 2016 Standings After Tuesday's Week 28 Results and Top Scorers

James DudkoMar 1, 2016

Everton's Romelu Lukaku moved closer to Leicester City's Jamie Vardy at the top of the Premier League scoring charts on Tuesday in a night when Vardy and the leaders were held at home.

Leicester failed to stretch their lead at top of the Premier League to five points after drawing with Midlands rivals West Bromwich Albion at the King Power Stadium.

Elsewhere, Diego Costa continued his remarkable renaissance under interim manager Guus Hiddink to help Chelsea beat Norwich City at Carrow Road and keep himself alive in the race for the Premier League's golden boot.

Recap

The Baggies stunned the Foxes early when Salomon Rondon overpowered the defence before slotting home. It had been an age since Leicester were breached at home, per Squawka:

The goal also maintained Rondon's current excellent form, according to OptaJoe:

Resolute defending then frustrated the leaders until Danny Drinkwater's shot took a huge deflection to equalise. Centre-back Jonas Olsson registered the unfortunate touch.

The end result helped Leicester set a benchmark this season:

Then it was Riyad Mahrez's turn to once again make the difference for the Foxes. The winger set up stand-in midfielder Andy King to put the table-toppers in front for the first time.

With one more assist, Mahrez confirmed his status as the league's most prolific attacking outlet this season:

But Mahrez became the villain when his handball allowed Craig Gardner to blast a free-kick in for an unlikely equaliser.

Costa netted Chelsea's second despite appearing in an offside position when he received the ball. But the ex-Atletico Madrid man's finish was smart and classy.

It was a finish typical of a striker in lethal and unmatched form at the moment, a fact confirmed by Squawka:

Brazilian full-back Kenedy had opened the scoring for the Blues in just under 40 seconds. But it's Costa's exploits that are driving the Chelsea revival.

As for Norwich, a place in the bottom three has been inevitable based on their recent form.

Everton also got an early goal at Villa Park when defender Ramiro Funes Mori nodded home. The former River Plate man has established a niche in front of goal since joining the Toffees, per OptaJoe:

However, Phil Kirkbride of the Liverpool Echo feels Everton don't make enough use of this niche:

Still, Everton were two up by the half-hour mark when Aaron Lennon ended a swift counter in style. Lukaku then added to his own impressive personal tally on the hour mark.

In the process, Lukaku set a club-mark for Everton, according to OptaJoe:

Squawka put into perspective just how prolific Lukaku is, despite his young age:

The Belgian has now gone ahead of Tottenham Hotspur's Harry Kane in the scoring charts.

Bournemouth made the most of Norwich's loss by damaging Southampton's hopes for European qualification thanks to goals from Steve Cook and ex-Arsenal prospect Benik Afobe.

Sunderland also gained vital ground in the relegation fight after fighting for a point against Crystal Palace at the Stadium of Light. Former player Connor Wickham bagged a brace to give Palace the lead.

Wickham is finding goals in clutches easy to come by recently, per OptaJoe:

But Fabio Borini salvaged a draw that moves Sunderland temporarily out of the drop zone.

Leicester will rue two dropped points if title rivals Tottenham Hotspur, Arsenal and Manchester City all take full advantage on Wednesday. The Foxes need front men Vardy and Mahrez to rediscover their scoring touch.
