Best Golazos from World Football This Weekend

Joe GallagherFeb 29, 2016

It was another tense weekend of football across the globe, with Manchester City lifting the League Cup trophy, Real Madrid losing the derby against Atletico and Paris Saint-Germain's astonishing run in Ligue 1 ending at the hands of Lyon.

In among it all were a number of thumping strikes, superb finishes and glorious displays of close control from all over Europe and as far away as Saudi Arabia and a Brazilian regional league.

We've taken a look through the best of the weekend to select our top 10 from world football.

Sit back, relax and enjoy our picks of the most stunning strikes from around the globe.

Renato Neto (AA Gent) vs. Lokeren

1 of 10

Gent beat Lokeren 3-1 on Friday to draw level on points with Belgian Pro League leaders Club Brugge, and they took the lead after just 10 minutes in spectacular fashion.

Renato Neto reacted brilliantly to a knockdown to volley home on the turn and put the home side in front at the Ghelamco Arena.

Brecht Dejaegere and Laurent Depoitre would complete the scoring for Gent.

Connor Wickham (Crystal Palace) vs. West Bromwich Albion

2 of 10

You might not have expected it to be the case, but Crystal Palace's trip to West Brom on Saturday evening turned out to be quite the game.

The Baggies raced to a 3-0 half-time lead before a Connor Wickham-inspired comeback fell just short in a 3-2 defeat.

But it was Wickham's second that caught the eye: a technically perfect volley that Ben Foster could do nothing about.

Lionel Messi (Barcelona) vs. Sevilla

3 of 10

You just can't keep Leo Messi out of the headlines.

The Argentine striker scored again as Barcelona continued their march toward a second successive La Liga title with a 2-1 win over Sevilla on Sunday.

Trailing 1-0, Messi stood over a free-kick toward the end of the first half. We know how this story ends...

Armand Gnanduillet (Leyton Orient) vs. Crawley Town

4 of 10

Leyton Orient remain just outside the playoff places in League Two, and they have Armand Gnanduillet to thank for it.

It seemed like there was nothing on for the Ivorian when he turned away from two Crawley defenders on Saturday before beating the goalkeeper from distance.

He added to his tally for the London club in the second half, and Orient moved into the seventh spot with a 2-0 victory at home.

Ziyad Al Sahafi (Al-Ittihad) vs. Al-Hilal

5 of 10

Al-Ittihad narrowed the gap at the top of the Saudi Pro League with a 1-0 victory over rivals Al-Hilal on Saturday, and their winner came in some style.

In the sixth minute, Ziyad Al Sahafi found himself with a little bit of wiggle room outside the penalty area, and he had the quality to decide Saudi Arabia's answer of El Clasico.

The visitors' win at the King Fahd International Stadium means that the top three in the Saudi first division are now separated by just one point.

Sergi Darder (Lyon) vs. Paris Saint-Germain

6 of 10

Lyon brought to an end Paris Saint-Germain's incredible unbeaten run in Ligue 1 on Sunday, and Sergi Darder's goal right before the end of the first half proved to be the winner.

The Spaniard brilliantly controlled a cross from the right first time, flicking the ball over his defender before poking the ball home.

Lucas Moura would pull one back for PSG, but it was a night to remember for Lyon.

Stephan El Shaarawy (Roma) vs. Empoli

7 of 10

Stephan El Shaarawy set Roma on their way nice and early as manager Luciano Spalletti's side moved to third in Serie A on Saturday night.

The Italian fired home this screamer after just five minutes and added another in the second half as Roma defeated Empoli 3-1.

It's been a happy loan spell so far for El Shaarawy in Rome.

Luiz Carlos (Guarany De Sobral) vs. Ceara

8 of 10

Why bother running when you can just do this?

In the Campeonato Cearense, a Brazilian state competition, Ceara defeated Guarany de Sobral 3-1 on Saturday, but it was Guarany's solitary one that stood out.

Luiz Carlos took just one touch after the restart to find the back of the net, launching the ball from the halfway line and over the goalkeeper's head.

It might have been a consolation goal, but it sure caught the eye of the world.

Jonathan Opoku (VVV-Venlo) vs. NAC Breda

9 of 10

VVV-Venlo maintained a five-point gap between themselves and third-placed FC Eindhoven in the Netherlands' second division on Friday, and Jonathan Opoku's goal was the standout.

With the score delicately poised after 79 minutes, the 25-year-old Dutchman showed some brilliant close control to steer clear of two NAC Breda defenders and lift the ball beautifully over the goalkeeper.

VVV won 4-3 but remain nine points behind league-leading Sparta Rotterdam.

Pierrick Capelle (Angers) vs. Guingamp

10 of 10

Pierrick Capelle capped a flowing team move with an equally impressive finish as Angers picked up a point in their trip to Guingamp on Saturday.

His team-mates exchanged nine one- or two-touch passes before the ball fell to Capelle just outside the penalty area. With his back to the goal, and the ball still in the air, it seemed like there was nothing on.

The Frenchman unleashed an unstoppable effort on the turn that left Angers ninth in Ligue 1, though just four points outside the top three.

What a strike.
