Rising Recruit Damion Daniels Earns 5 Scholarship Offers in One Day

Damon SaylesFeb 27, 2016

Friday was a day Damion Daniels called "the best day of my life so far." It was a day where his college options increased significantly.

Daniels, a 3-star defensive tackle from Bishop Dunne High School in Dallas, landed offers from five schools on Friday. What made the day so intriguing was that the offers—in order of announcement according to Bishop Dunne head coach Michael Johnson: Texas, Ole Miss, Angelo State, Michigan and Iowa State—all came shortly after lunchtime.

"It was a great day. I'm excited about all of my offers," said Daniels, the younger brother of Oklahoma State defensive tackle Darrion Daniels. "It's going to give me a lot of extra homework reading about all of the schools."

Per Johnson, the first offer of the day from Texas came around 10 a.m. CT. Ole Miss offered about an hour later, and then Angelo State, Michigan and Iowa State shortly followed. Damion Daniels said he now has roughly a dozen offers combined. He already had offers from LSU, USC and Iowa, among others.

The 6'2", 315-pound athlete is looking to continue a legacy at the next level. Nicknamed "Baby D" as the smallest of the Daniels men, his father is former Texas Tech defensive lineman and All-American Tony Daniels. And with his brother already shining at Oklahoma State, the 2017 lineman is preparing for his opportunity as a college football player.

Damion Daniels was a sophomore on Bishop Dunne's state-champion team. He helped guide Bishop Dunne to a state-final run this past season. He's a deceptively quick lineman who possesses great pad level. More importantly, he's someone who is on a mission to be the biggest football name of the Daniels family.

"Damion is a powerful defensive lineman who has great ball get-off. He is a disruptive football player," Johnson said. "He is very flexible in his hips and can play in any scheme, but he is suited to play the one technique [nose tackle]. He loves the game and has the passion to be the best.

"He wants to make a name for himself because he wants to be better than his brother and his father."

Daniels' fire stays lit with the help of his older brother. While the two have a special chemistry when together, they also are intense competitors between each other. Throw in their father's accomplishments, and it makes for interesting "can you top this?" conversation.

"A lot goes through my head because my goal is always to outdo my brother in everything," Daniels said. "I'm sure he hasn't had five [offers] in one day."

Daniels added that his brother gave him sound advice—in big-brother tone only fitting for two super-close competitors.

"He said, 'Keep it up, fat boy. They've slept on you too long," Daniels said. "It's time to wake them up. You're not done yet; it's just the beginning.'"

While he may not have another five-offer day, Daniels is still a hot target around the country. Johnson is expecting a few more offers to come within the next few days.
