Biggest Jekyll and Hyde Teams in College Basketball in 2015-16

Scott HarrisFeb 17, 2016

There are ups and downs in every college basketball season. More so for some teams than for others.

It's a game of runs and a season of runs. Sometimes teams, like players, are just a little streaky, though.

The following five teams may be the streakiest squads in college basketball in the 2015-16 campaign. They have, if you will, the Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde dual personality.

They are ranked based on overall season performance, long streaks in both directions and the current state of the squad.

5. SMU Mustangs

At 21-3, the SMU Mustangs have been up a lot more often than they have been down this season.

All three of their losses—at Temple, at Houston and at home against Tulsa—came at the hands of mediocre teams.

Then they turn around and put up a huge effort to topple Gonzaga 69-60 a few days ago.

The key to that win was senior guard and leading scorer Nic Moore, who poured in 25 points and 11 assists for the Mustangs.

"It was neat watching Nic tonight in this environment and this kind of game," head coach Larry Brown said after the game, according to Bill Nichols of the Dallas Morning News. "That makes you feel good because he's come a long way."

On the bad side, SMU is 91st in KenPom's defensive rankings and an alarming 286th in adjusted tempo. So if they give up buckets and fall behind, they have a hard time digging out of the hole.

4. Maryland Terrapins

In some cases, a team with a dual personality has a star with a dual personality. That is the case, to some extent, with the Maryland Terrapins and their star point guard, Melo Trimble.

Sure, he's still the leading scorer (14.2 points per game) and assist man (5.3 assists per game) for a top-10 team, and in the long run, Trimble is going to be fine.

But he and his Terps have shown up flat for some tough losses this season. For example, last weekend's 13-point home loss to Wisconsin, in which Trimble shot a terrible 1-14 from the field, was a real momentum killer.

Add in the fact that freshman center Diamond Stone, who had been rolling up until Saturday, was suspended a game for slamming an opponent's head into the ground. These are not good tendencies.

Jeff Ermann of 247Sports broke down the Terrapins' situation on Wednesday:

"

Questions persist about Maryland's March upside, primarily because of star guard Melo Trimble's inconsistency, mediocre outside shooting and turnover problems (minus-1.9 turnovers per game, rankings 302nd nationally). The Terps, though, have one of the nation's most balanced offensive attacks and rank 22nd nationally in scoring defense.

3. Texas Longhorns

The Texas Longhorns are starting to jell under Shaka Smart.

After an 8-4 start to the season, they're a solid 8-5 in Big 12 play and 17-9 overall. They have wins over North Carolina, Baylor and Iowa State in their pocket.

But this also is the team that lost to 11-15 TCU. Then again, they just finished breaking down West Virginia's vaunted press for a season sweep of the now-No. 10 Mountaineers.

That win came after a two-game losing streak, of course, and it's all a part of being in the Big 12 this season. But the Longhorns seem to be "hooking" themselves in multiple directions, or something.

2. Iowa State

Georges Niang is an All-American. Monte Morris is the most underrated point guard in the country.

But if those two aren't shouldering the load and then some, they just don't have the horsepower down low to stop other teams, especially in this season's Big 12 rock fights.

The Cyclones sit at third in KenPom's offensive efficiency rankings. They rank 102nd on the defensive side. To illustrate it another way, they are 250th in the nation in scoring defense, with 74.8 points allowed per game.

This team is a tale of two halves: offense and defense.

1. Florida State Seminoles

Going back to the beginning of 2016, the Florida State Seminoles have three separate multigame losing streaks.

The Seminoles are a symmetrical 7-7 since the start of the new year, with their losses coming in one three-game stretch and two two-game stretches.

I think that about sums it up. They can be very on, but they can be equally off.

With guards like Dwayne Bacon, Malik Beasley and Xavier Rathan-Mayes, their backcourt can really play. But sometimes it seems like there just aren't enough shot attempts to go around in Tallahassee.
