PSG vs. Chelsea: Match Odds, Key Players and Storylines for Round-of-16 Leg 1

Tom BeckFeb 16, 2016

French champions Paris Saint-Germain will renew their rivalry with Premier League titleholders Chelsea on Tuesday in the first leg of their 2015-16 UEFA Champions League round-of-16 tie, a repeat of last season's dramatic and ill-tempered affair.

An extra-time header from Thiago Silva settled matters when the pair last met, but much has changed for the Premier League side since that tie.

Here's a look at the odds for Tuesday's matchup. All odds are courtesy of Odds Shark.

Key Players

With Kurt Zouma and club captain John Terry sidelined due to injury, Gary Cahill is expected to line up alongside Branislav Ivanovic in the heart of the Chelsea defence, per Darren Lewis of the Mirror.

The absence of Terry will be of particular significance, with his leadership, awareness and aerial presence still crucial to the team despite his advancing years.

OptaJean shared a statistic that shed some light on Chelsea's performance without Terry:

In contrast to Terry, Zouma's athleticism and pace will be sorely missed at the back. These two omissions mean Ivanovic, currently enduring his worst season in west London, will likely accompany Cahill in a makeshift defence.

Per Soccerway, England international Cahill has featured in just 14 matches this season and admitted in January he had grown frustrated at the lack of first-team action, per the Guardian's Dominic Fifield.

Questions will be asked about the centre-back's match fitness due to his lengthy spell on the sidelines, particularly when faced with the task of stopping one of Europe's most prolific front lines.

Meanwhile, for the Parisians, Zlatan Ibrahimovic remains their main source of goals and primary attacking threat, having netted 21 goals in 20 league appearances this term, per WhoScored.com.

The enigmatic Swede's goalscoring record against English teams, three goals in 16 games per Sami Mokbel of the Daily Mail, is unimpressive at best, but Ibrahimovic's talent remains intact at the ripe age of 34 years old.

Storylines

Serge Aurier has been suspended by PSG after footage surfaced on social media of the Ivorian defender insulting manager Laurent Blanc and several of his team-mates, per the Mirror's Aaron Flanagan. The 23-year-old, a regular first-team player, will not feature against Chelsea, with his career at the club hanging by a thread following Blanc's scathing response, per the Daily Mail's Matt Barlow.

French football journalist Jonathan Johnson revealed additional details regarding Aurier's future:

Chelsea have problems of their own, as interim boss Guus Hiddink was forced to tell Eden Hazard to concentrate on his football, per Michael Kelleher of Sky Sports, after the Belgian winger admitted to Le Parisien he would find it difficult to turn down a move to upcoming opponents PSG.

Per Mark Ashenden of Sky Sports, Hazard told the French news outlet: "It is difficult to say no to PSG, or to any of the teams capable of winning the Champions League. PSG are now in that category. And for me, winning the Champions League is my main aim."

The fortunes of both sides have altered drastically since their last meeting in 2014-15, but PSG could face a stern test at Parc des Princes, with Chelsea targeting success in Europe in order to help them forget about their domestic blues.

To do so, they'll likely need Hazard in top form, and it'll be interesting to see if the Belgian uses this tie as an audition for a potential future switch to the Paris club.
