Earlier this week, reports started to circulate that an anonymous buyer, thought to be Barcelona and Argentina star Lionel Messi, had outbid his great rival Cristiano Ronaldo for the world's most expensive car.

But the five-time Ballon d'Or winner took to Instagram on Thursday to rubbish the suggestion that he had dropped €32 million on the 1957 Ferrari 335 S Spider Scaglietti, which was driven in the 1958 Cuban Grand Prix.

Messi posed for a photo with a model of the Pixar invention Lightning McQueen from Cars along with the caption "My new car."

If only he'd give such a resounding response to the rumours linking his team-mates with moves to the Premier League, such as Antony Kastrinakis' report in the Sun.
