FA Cup 2016: 4th-Round Results, Scores from Sunday's Fixtures

James DudkoJan 31, 2016

Chelsea and Everton booked their places in the fifth round of the 2016 FA Cup with comfortable away wins on Sunday. The Toffees won, 3-0, at League Two side Carlisle United, while Chelsea were hugely impressive in seeing off Championship outfit MK Dons, 5-1.

Aaron Lennon dominated for Everton at Brunton Park, while Oscar bagged a hat-trick for Chelsea at Stadium mk.

The results are a welcome boost for managers Roberto Martinez and Guus Hiddink. Toffees chief Martinez has been criticised for his side's inconsistent form this season. Progress in this competition can help heal the wounds after the club's recent semi-final defeat to Manchester City in the Capital One Cup.

As for Hiddink, he now has Chelsea on a nine-match unbeaten run since succeeding Jose Mourinho. Not only that, but the quality of the west London club's play is currently the best it's been all season.

Here are the final scores from Sunday's fourth-round fixtures:

Recap

To say Chelsea turned on the style would be an understatement. Right from the off, the Blues oozed class, passing the ball with authority and creating some highly attractive moves going forward.

Oscar was the first on the sheet before the visitors conspired to make a mess of several otherwise well-worked chances. Eden Hazard hit the post when it was easier to score, while Diego Costa and Oscar slid into each other as they fought for the right to tap the ball into an empty net.

Simon Johnson of the London Evening Standard was barely exaggerating when he summed up Chelsea's dominance:

In all the confusion, a thoroughly outclassed home team actually managed to equalise when Darren Potter rifled home.

But Chelsea's slumber couldn't last long given their quality on the day. Oscar scored twice before the break, before Hazard struck from the penalty spot in the second half.

Squawka noted how the goal ended the scarcely believable drought previously endured by last season's Football Writers' Association Footballer of the Year winner:

Teenage striker Bertrand Traore, the player at the centre of a potential transfer ban for the Stamford Bridge club, came off the bench to cap the goal rush for Hiddink's side.

On this form, Chelsea look ominous as a contender for the Cup that Hiddink lifted in 2009 to end his first spell in charge.

Lennon teed up Arouna Kone to score the Toffees' very early opener before doubling the lead himself to cap a fine first-half display.

Under-pressure Everton boss Martinez had left a few key figures on the bench, including goalkeeper Tim Howard and star striker Romelu Lukaku. But the Spaniard still fielded a strong starting XI against the lower-league hosts, including midfield gem Ross Barkley and returning right-back Seamus Coleman.

Carlisle chief Keith Curle hoped striker Derek Asamoah could lead the line and cause a few problems for what's been a shaky Everton back four this season.

Phil Kirkbride of the Liverpool Echo provided the team news for both sides:

It took less than two minutes for the Toffees to go in front. Tom Cleverley started a free-flowing move with a delightfully lofted pass from deep to release Lennon out wide. The former Tottenham Hotspur winger then slid the ball into Kone's path at the back post.

Kone's finish continued the Ivory Coast man's excellent form in this season's competition:

Making the most of a rare start as a centre-forward, Kone was very active early on, as BBC Sport showed:

With such sharp movement married to quick and incisive passing, it wasn't long before Everton found the net again. Lennon got the final touch after some superb close control in the box.

It was a rare goal for the jet-heeled wide man:

The goal was a fitting reward for an excellent first 45 minutes from Lennon. WhoScored.com detailed his impressive numbers:

Everton played a more controlled game after the break, content to let the home side press the issue. It wasn't until after the hour-mark when the Toffees scored again.

Some fine combination passing between Cleverley and substitute Leon Osman crafted a shooting chance for Barkley. Never shy about taking a shot, Barkley's powerful drive took a deflection on its way in.

BT Sport Football provided a highlight of the attractive move and finish:

Martinez and his players needed this performance and result. A potential banana skin was avoided, while there were some excellent individual displays, particularly from Bryan Oviedo, Cleverley and Lennon.

But perhaps it will be the rare clean sheet that is most treasured as Everton await the draw for the next round and look to revive their form in the Premier League.

As for Chelsea, they sent a message to rest of the tournament that although their league title defence has been a huge disappointment, they remain a serious contender for major trophies this season.
