Zambia and Mali booked their places in the quarter-finals of CHAN 2016 after Group D's teams closed out the group-stage fixtures on Wednesday. They have joined Guinea and Tunisia in the last eight, after the latter two nations qualified on an eventful Tuesday that saw one of the favourites, Nigeria, eliminated.

Mali will now face Group C winners Tunisia, while Zambia have been drawn against Guinea—conquerors of the Super Eagles.

Recap

Hamidou Sinayoko came close to breaking the deadlock for Mali during what was a fairly turgid, goalless stalemate with Zambia, but the forward blazed over from inside the box with 10 minutes remaining.

Sinayoko's day got worse when he was booked in stoppage time, meaning the Djoliba AC star will now miss the quarter-finals. Earning the Man of the Match award, per CAFonline, is probably not enough to dampen his disappointment:

Meanwhile, Zambia will be confident in the last eight having made an unbeaten start to the tournament during the group stages.

In the other game, a first point of the tournament provided scant consolation for Zimbabwe, who finished rooted to the bottom of Group D.

Creative midfield man William Manondo opened Zimbabwe's account after latching on to a mistake in the Ugandan back four and sweeping home an emphatic shot into the corner of the net.

But Zimbabwe couldn't hold the lead for a famous win. Instead, Geofrey Serunkuma netted to earn the Cranes a draw. Still, Mali's draw had already condemned Uganda to an early exit from the tournament.

In the next round, impressive Zambia will be wary of a buoyant Guinea. As for Mali, the Eagles won't be wary about facing Tunisia after the latter only managed one win in qualifying from the group stage.
