Leo Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo on Brink of a Combined 1,000 Career Goals

Lionel Messi can make a bit of history on Wednesday as Barcelona host Athletic Bilbao in the second leg of their Copa del Rey quarter-final.

The Argentinian can reach a combined milestone with his great rival, Cristiano Ronaldo, of 1,000 career goals, reports Sky Sports.

Between them the pair, who have dominated the Ballon d'Or podium for a decade, have found the net 999 times for their respective clubs and countries.

Ronaldo has 518 goals in 773 games for Sporting Lisbon, Manchester United, Real Madrid and Portugal, while Messi has netted 481 times in 611 appearances with Barcelona and Argentina.

And the reigning player of the year Messi has the inside running to reach quadruple figures, with Barcelona to play twice (Atletico Madrid to come on Saturday) before Madrid host Espanyol on Sunday.
