Union Berlin Midfielder Welcomed Back by Crowd After Recovering from Cancer

It was a special day for Benjamin Kohler on Sunday, as the Union Berlin midfielder received a brilliant ovation on his return to action after recovering from stomach cancer.

The 35-year-old was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma of the stomach in February 2015 but has since fully recovered from the illness and made his playing return in the friendly against Borussia Dortmund.

The match was arranged to commemorate the Bundesliga II side's 50th anniversary and provided a fitting opportunity for Kohler to make an inspiring comeback.

He was welcomed fittingly by a warm reception from the club's fans, as Dortmund ran out 3-1 winners in front of an impressive crowd of 22,000.
