On the opposite end of the spectrum, Chelsea could only manage a home draw with an Everton side that has seen their defensive woes return after a brief uptick in form. Manager Guus Hiddink's group is now just six points clear of the relegation zone, and that number could drop to four by Monday night.

City put together one of their most complete efforts of the campaign to cruise past Crystal Palace, 4-0. It represented a much-needed result and a confidence-building performance after the club struggled to finish scoring opportunities in a scoreless midweek draw with Everton.
Although the Sky Blues remained firmly in the title chase throughout the first half of the campaign, it still felt like they had another gear available. It seemed they could still showcase a consistently higher level of form. Perhaps Saturday's blowout win is the start of that rise.

There's obviously plenty of praise to go around after that type of match. That said, the main source of optimism for City will be the play of striker Sergio Aguero, who finished with two goals and an assist. The side could become borderline unbeatable down the stretch if he begins playing his best football.
Now the question is whether those signs of progress will endure. City face a tricky away test against West Ham next weekend, which should begin to provide the answer.

Speaking of the Hammers, they made a quiet rise up the table with an eight-match streak of earning at least a point, including a three-game winning streak heading into Saturday's clash with Newcastle. That run of success ended with a 2-1 loss, however, and brought their surprising charge to a halt.
West Ham weren't expected to compete for a top-four spot, but it's reached the point of the campaign where every club still in the mix must be taken seriously. A match with the relegation-endangered Magpies is one those with European hopes should win, though.
The club's official site highlighted comments from manager Slaven Bilic, who admitted the disappointment before quickly turning his focus to the next match.
"We have to be fair and realistically say that they were better on the day and they deserved to beat us," Bilic said. "Unfortunately, it's the end of the positive run and now we have to come back in shape and prepare for our next game."
That aforementioned meeting with Manchester City is now even more crucial. Getting a positive result would quickly erase this defeat from the memory bank and get them back on track. Of course, another loss could start a slide that drops them from European contention.
West Ham are one of several clubs to exceed most expectations through this point in the season. It's a group led by Leicester while more usual suspects like Manchester United, Liverpool and Chelsea search for better form. But now, it's starting to reach make-or-break time for those unlikely contenders.
