Denzel Nkemdiche Reportedly Hospitalized: Latest Details, Comments, Reaction

Tim DanielsDec 22, 2015

Former Ole Miss linebacker Denzel Nkemdiche was rushed to the hospital Monday.

Sarah Fowler of the Clarion-Ledger reported, per a press release from the Ridgeland Police Department, that "officers responded to 711 Lake Harbor Drive at 9:31 Monday morning for reports of an 'unresponsive male.' The call was deemed a 'medical aid call,' and Ridgeland Fire Department was called to the scene to assist."

Nkemdiche was then taken to the hospital, per Fowler. However, the University of Mississippi Medical Center said "there was no patient listed under Nkemdiche's name."

Ridgeland Chief John Neal added, per Fowler, "No law enforcement action taken, and there is no criminal investigation at this time."

WAPT News first reported that one of the Nkemdiche brothers—Robert is currently a player for the Rebels—was hospitalized. According to the report, the school said Denzel is no longer on the team and is under his father's supervision.

RebelGrove.com's Neal McCready (via Daniel Paulling of the Clarion-Ledger) reported in November that Nkemdiche was admitted to the intensive care unit at Baptist Memorial Hospital in north Mississippi. No reason was provided.

The family released a statement about his status to David Brandt of the Associated Press on Nov. 19 and called the ailment "not life-threatening." They provided no further details, and it's unclear whether the two hospital visits are related to the same issue.

His brother Robert was suspended by Ole Miss head coach Hugh Freeze this week after being charged with marijuana possession. Tyler Estep of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution noted police found Nkemdiche bleeding on the ground outside and a broken window in a fourth-floor hotel room where "approximately seven rolled marijuana cigarettes" were found.

Bleacher Report's Matt Miller mentioned that teams around the NFL are "very concerned about this family influence."

Robert Nkemdiche announced his intention to forgo his senior senior with the Rebels and enter the 2016 NFL draft on Sunday after he was suspended for the Sugar Bowl.

No further details about the latest situation involving Denzel Nkemdiche or his current health status were made available.
