David Long Jr. Decommits from Stanford: Latest Details, Comments and Reaction

Adam WellsDec 18, 2015

Cornerback David Long Jr. is re-opening his recruiting after decommitting from Stanford four months after giving the Cardinal a verbal pledge.

In his official announcement on Twitter, Long listed two schools as the favorites to land his services:

A 2016 recruit, Long is a 4-star prospect and seventh-best cornerback, per 247Sports. He's listed at 6'0" and 175 pounds, with the site's Crystal Ball projections having Washington, USC and Michigan among the favorites to land his services.

Long's ESPN.com scouting report notes that his size isn't ideal for the position, but "the skill set is very impressive for an island player outside on defense."

When Long committed to Stanford in August, he told 247Sports it was the place he had always wanted to attend college.

"

Coming into high school Stanford is the school I always wanted to go to. That's why I chose to go to Loyola High School, too, because it would prepare me for a school like Stanford. I know I'll get a great education there and I really like Stanford's coaches, too. I love how Stanford plays hard-nosed football.

"

Being 17 years old, Long is certainly allowed to back out of such a strong declarative statement. He's trying to find a school and football program that best suits his skill set.

Stanford's loss could turn into Washington's or Michigan's—or another school he didn't list—gain. Long has some development ahead of him, both in high school and early in his college career, but the upside is tremendous. He will be a difference-maker at the next level soon.
