Kyle Allen Reportedly Decides to Transfer to Houston from Texas A&M

Mike NorrisDec 13, 2015

Texas A&M Aggies quarterback Kyle Allen had an up-and-down two years in College Station and is hoping for a fresh start at the University of Houston.

Mark Berman of Fox 26 and Joseph Duarte of the Houston Chronicle both reported on Allen's decision to transfer to the Cougars.

On Dec. 13, SportsRadio 610 reported Cougars head coach Tom Herman spoke with Allen on Sunday (h/t John P. Lopez of CBS Houston):

Allen, a former five-star recruit out of Scottsdale, Ariz., met with Herman and at least one other member of the Houston Cougars staff at an undisclosed location in town. After sitting out the 2016 season, which will be Greg Ward Jr.’s final season, Allen will have two seasons of eligibility.

"

Allen, who has thrown for 3,532 yards, 33 touchdowns and 14 interceptions in two seasons with Texas A&M, certainly had multiple suitors. However, Houston may have had an edge considering it's coming off an American Athletic Conference championship and is one of only two currently ranked schools in the state of Texas along with the TCU Horned Frogs.

As Matt Hladik of College Spun wrote, Herman has had success with quarterbacks in the past: "On paper, Houston seems like a strong fit for Allen. Herman has a history of explosive offenses and for getting the most out of his quarterbacks, which he certainly did at Ohio State."

Herman was the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Ohio State from 2012-14 before coming to Houston this year.

Allen showed signs of being a great quarterback, but he was benched after a 5-2 start this season only to start the final two games of the regular season.

He posted this message on Twitter to Texas A&M and its fans after announcing his intent to transfer:

Transfers can be tricky because there's no way to guarantee a player will fit in with his new team. However, there is no denying Allen can play, and sitting out next year could help him learn the Houston system.
