Recap
Giroud stole the show with his first-ever Arsenal hat-trick in midweek and set another personal mark on Sunday, scoring his 50th goal for the Gunners against Villa. Per Squawka Football, he did it in just 113 matches, which puts him among some elite company:
The France international gave the Gunners the lead from the penalty spot after just eight minutes, and Aaron Ramsey would add a second goal shortly before half-time to preserve the win. Villa played reasonably well but never seemed likely to cut into the lead, and after 16 matches, they remain bottom of the table.
After the match, Gunners manager Arsene Wenger reserved special praise for his two scorers, via Henry Winter of the Times:
It's hard to disagree with Wenger. Giroud is enjoying a fine season, and his recent form has been spectacular. With nine goals this Premier League season, he's easily Arsenal's top scorer, and he has kept the team's attack alive in the absence of Alexis Sanchez.
Origi salvaged a point for Liverpool, scoring a late goal to earn a 2-2 draw against WBA. The Belgian youngster bagged the equaliser deep into extra time, but the visitors won't complain about the large amount of added time given Dejan Lovren's horrific injury.
The Croatian needed lengthy treatment on the pitch before being carried off, and he looks likely to miss a big chunk of time.
Aleksandar Mitrovic and Ayoze Perez scored late to hand the Magpies a shocking 2-1 win over Spurs, who took the lead in the first half through Eric Dier. With the win, Newcastle no longer find themselves in the relegation zone.
On Saturday, Lukaku pulled within two goals of Vardy, who leads the top scorer's race, by scoring in the 1-1 draw against Norwich City. The young Belgian has started a bit of a streak of his own, prompting this tweet from former England international Gary Lineker:
Consistency has been an issue for the Toffees in 2015-16, and their last three Premier League outings have all ended in draws. But Lukaku's fine form is keeping the team in the thick of the race for a Europa League ticket, and that alone makes him invaluable.
He and Vardy might have stolen the show so far this season, but Watford's Odion Ighalo is still flying somewhat under the radar, which is remarkable considering his fine form. With 10 goals in 16 matches, football blogger Jonas Giaever thinks it's time to start taking the Nigerian seriously:
Entering the season, most thought Troy Deeney would be the man to lead the Hornets' attack. Deeney has played well, but there's no denying Ighalo has been Watford's most valuable player by some distance.
The combination of those two has seen the Hornets rise all the way to seventh place in the standings, and as of right now, Premier League safety already looks like a guarantee. Don't be shocked if a number of clubs try to move for Ighalo in January, although Watford will be desperate to keep him at the club.
