Manchester United failed to progress to the knockout stages in the UEFA Youth League on Tuesday despite beating Wolfsburg 2-0 in Germany, thanks to PSV Eindhoven's triumph over CSKA Moscow.

Elsewhere, Manchester City's 1-1 draw with Borussia Monchengladbach was enough to secure the top spot in Group D, despite Sevilla's 1-0 win over Juventus.

Meanwhile, Paris Saint-Germain claimed the all-important first place in Group A with a 5-2 win over Shakhtar Donetsk.

Tuesday Recap

United were unfortunate not to be ahead in the early stages when Marcus Rashford pounced on a poor back pass, but the youngster was unable to hit the target, per Stuart Mathieson of the Manchester Evening News:

However, as the MEN's Simon Bajkowski noted, the forward was clipped by the goalkeeper and should have been awarded a penalty:

The Red Devils broke the deadlock shortly before half-time when Axel Tuanzebe turned in a rebound off the crossbar. United doubled their tally after the break via Tosin Kehinde, per football writer Daniel Feliciano:

United needed CSKA to beat PSV for them to progress, though, but the Dutch side came out on top.

Ramon-Pascal Lundqvist and Albert Gudmundsson found the net for PSV while Timur Zhamaletdinov offered CSKA's only reply, the Russians hindered by Ivan Maklakov's red card early in the second half.

PSG got off to a strong start when Jean-Kevin Augustin put them ahead after 10 minutes, but Oleksandr Pikhalonok levelled proceedings before half-time.

With Real Madrid winning against Malmo, Les Parisiens needed to win and responded to their setback in style as Nanitamo Ikone, Yakou Meite and Odsonne Edouard all got on the scoresheet in the second half, the latter bagging a brace while Dmytro Topalov netted a second for Shakhtar.

Alvaro Rivero opened the scoring for Real in the first half, and shortly before the break Los Blancos keeper Luca Zidane made a vital stop to deny Teddy Bergqvist's spot-kick and keep his side ahead. Rivero had his brace through a penalty of his own, before Manu rounded out the scoring.

Francisco Sanchez scored the decisive goal in Sevilla's 1-0 win over Juventus, with a deflected long-range effort in the 57th minute.

His side could have had several more goals as they dominated for much of the game, but nevertheless the Bianconeri were unable to seriously challenge for an equaliser let alone find the win they needed to progress having had Francesco Cassata sent off late in the first half.

MANCHESTER, ENGLAND - AUGUST 14: Patrick Vieira the coach of Manchester City U21 shouts instructions to his players during the Barclays U21 Premier League match between Manchester City U21 and Tottenham Hotspur U21 at The Academy Stadium on August 14, 20

Sevilla's win ensured City needed at least a point at home to Monchengladbach in Patrick Vieira's last game in charge of their under-19s.

That looked to be under threat when the German side took the lead through a Tsiy-William Ndenge penalty after 20 minutes—following a foul that saw Ashley Smith-Brown shown a red card for denying a clear goalscoring opportunity.

Despite playing the rest of the game with 10 men, City were able to equalise on the stroke of half-time through a lovely dinked finish from Brahim Diaz and hold on for the draw. The result ensures City progress straight to the round of 16, while Sevilla will face one of the eight winners in the "Domestic Champions" path.
