McDermott Out for Rest of Game

Saturday, Dec. 19

Nick Friedell of ESPN.com reported McDermott was dealing with soreness in his right knee.

McDermott hardly played as a rookie but was an excellent scorer in college at Creighton. Part of the reason for his bit role was arthroscopic right knee surgery that caused him to miss extended time.

When the Bulls went to a more offensive identity under new coach Fred Hoiberg, a greater role emerged for the 23-year-old, who has averaged 9.3 points on 45.6 percent shooting this year, including 43.5 percent from beyond the arc.

Although the Bulls still have explosive scorers like Jimmy Butler and Derrick Rose on the wing, their spacing may suffer for the time being with McDermott out of the lineup. Tony Snell presents similar matchup problems but is more of a 2-3 combo, whereas the taller McDermott can be used as a stretch 4.

Hoiberg will likely gear the offensive more toward Pau Gasol in the post until McDermott returns. Otherwise, Chicago can maintain the same sort of style by giving Snell additional minutes while leaning even more on Nikola Mirotic.
