Football writer Dave Phillips provided a brief breakdown of the nominees by club, with Real Madrid the most well represented despite having won only the Club World Cup last season:
Barcelona's treble winners have 10 nominees, but goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen is the only member of the Blaugrana's victorious starting XI in the Champions League final not to be included, per Spanish football writer Dermot Corrigan:
The beaten Champions League finalists, Juventus, are represented by Gianluigi Buffon, Giorgio Chiellini and Paul Pogba, with former stars Arturo Vidal, Carlos Tevez and Andrea Pirlo also included.
Rooney's inclusion will likely baffle many people as he has been a long way from his best in 2015, particularly during the current Premier League campaign, in which he has scored only twice in 11 matches, per WhoScored.com.
The United skipper's team-mate David De Gea is one of five goalkeeping nominees, with Manchester City's Sergio Aguero, Arsenal's Alexis Sanchez and Chelsea's Eden Hazard also included from the Premier League.
FIFPro is the worldwide players' union and canvassed votes from almost 25,000 professionals to produce this year's shortlist, which will eventually be whittled down to form a single team in a 4-3-3 formation, per ESPN FC.
The final World XI will be announced at the Ballon d'Or ceremony in Zurich on Jan. 11, 2016.
