Manchester United vs. PSV Eindhoven: Score, Reaction from 2015 Champions League

Gianni VerschuerenNov 25, 2015

Manchester United and PSV Eindhoven shared the spoils during Wednesday's 2015 UEFA Champions League action, playing out a 0-0 draw at Old Trafford. The result means both teams will still have everything to play for during the final group-stage fixtures.

Chances were few on either side of the pitch, and while hosts United dominated possession and were the better team, they couldn't find a way past goalkeeper Jeroen Zoet.

Following Wolfsburg's 2-0 win over CSKA Moscow, Die Wolfe, United and PSV can all still qualify for the next round of the Champions League. The Red Devils are assured a spot in the UEFA Europa League, and a win over Wolfsburg on the final matchday will see them win Group B.

As shared by Bleacher Report UK, both Wayne Rooney and Anthony Martial returned to United's starting XI, the latter recovering in time after he was spotted on crutches following France's international friendly against England:

Hector Moreno started for the visitors, and as expected, he was loudly jeered every time he came near the ball, with Old Trafford remembering he was the one who injured Luke Shaw in Eindhoven.

United pressed forward from the opening kick-off, with Memphis Depay looking lively and eager to impress against his old club. Jesse Lingard also saw plenty of the ball in the opening minutes, as did Morgan Schneiderlin, who acted as the main conductor early.

Matteo Darmian nearly picked out Martial with a lovely cross, but Moreno closed down the space just in time. PSV could hardly muster any chances, although Chris Smalling had to pay attention when Memphis carelessly gave up possession.

Manchester Evening News' Rob Dawson liked what he saw from the Red Devils:

PSV were struggling, and things got even worse when Luciano Narsingh had to be replaced due to injury after just 18 minutes.

Lingard twice came close to setting himself up with a chance, first narrowly missing a cross from Schneiderlin before a poor first touch undid a lovely move from Martial.

Paddy Power wasn't too impressed with the lack of goals, however:

Zoet was forced into making a first good save to deny Schneiderlin, while his colleague David De Gea also had to be sharp when Luuk de Jong found some space to unleash a tricky shot.

Moreno then placed a header well wide of the target after a great delivery from Andres Guardado, and Zoet showed his class with a superb reaction save on Martial. The PSV goalkeeper certainly made an impression during the first half, although he nearly committed a comical error under pressure from Rooney.

He recovered just in time to prevent the veteran forward from scoring, and the score remained 0-0 going into half-time. Agence France-Presse's Tom Williams weighed in on the action:

The Red Devils came very close to breaking the deadlock early in the second half, but Lingard's header flew just past the post following a superb cross from Martial.

Schneiderlin put Zoet back to work with a hard shot as United's pressure continued, but PSV looked dangerous on the counter attack. A poor pass from Smalling resulted in De Jong finding himself in a promising position, but he rushed his shot and fired over De Gea's goal.

United manager Louis van Gaal made a double substitution in an effort to shake things up, with Marouane Fellaini and Ashley Young entering for Bastian Schweinsteiger and Memphis.

Samuel Luckhurst of the Manchester Evening News wasn't too happy with Memphis' efforts:

Davy Propper tried his luck from a long way out and drew a good save from De Gea, as PSV started getting more comfortable in midfield. United were still the better team, but with the final whistle drawing nearer, the visitors seemed more willing to attack.

Smalling had to make a vital block to stop a promising PSV attack from developing, with Santiago Arias looking for De Jong.

Minutes later, Lingard should have given the hosts the lead, but somehow, the youngster managed to fire over the bar from point-blank range.

United blogger Liam Canning couldn't believe the team still wasn't leading:

Darmian prevented Propper from bearing down on goal with a last-minute tackle, while Rooney desperately tried to get Fellaini involved with a handful of long balls, to no avail. The home fans started leaving Old Trafford well before the final whistle, and they missed little, as the hosts failed to mount much of a final push.

With CSKA Moscow losing 2-0 at home against Wolfsburg, United are now sure to survive in Europe this winter, but qualification for the next round of the Champions League isn't yet in the bag.

The Red Devils sit one point behind Wolfsburg and one ahead of PSV in the standings, and United face a difficult trip to Germany on the final matchday.

CSKA Moscow will travel to Eindhoven carrying very slim hopes of qualifying for the Europa League.

Post-Match Reaction

As shared by Manchester United's official Twitter account, Van Gaal maintains beating Wolfsburg and qualifying for the next round is still possible:

Smalling echoed a similar sentiment:
