Premier League Table: Week 13 Standings, Full Weekend Recap After Sunday's Score

Christopher SimpsonNov 22, 2015

Tottenham Hotspur extended their unbeaten run to 12 Premier League games as they saw off West Ham United 4-1 at White Hart Lane on Sunday.

A Harry Kane brace and goals from Toby Alderweireld and Kyle Walker gave Spurs a supremely comfortable victory, while Manuel Lanzini added a late consolation for the Hammers at the end.

After a slow start, Spurs dominated proceedings and could easily have scored more as they continue to grow under Mauricio Pochettino.

Weekend Round-Up

The match at White Hart Lane got off to an inauspicious start as the Hammers sought to stifle their opponents' time and space on the ball.

Christian Eriksen mustered Spurs' first chance of the game after 20 minutes when he tested Adrian with a well-struck shot from distance and Kane put his side ahead shortly after.

Dele Alli's shot from the edge of the area was blocked, but it fell kindly for the England international, who turned Carl Jenkinson with ease before lashing home.

The goal opened the game up as Cheikhou Kouyate rattled the crossbar for the visitors, but Alderweireld doubled Spurs' lead with a thunderous header from Eriksen's delivery.

The hosts should have had two more by half-time as Alli hit the woodwork with a header of his own, before Kane completely mishit an effort while one-on-one with Adrian.

Football commentator Ian Darke believes the Lilywhites can be considered title contenders this season, while former Spurs striker Gary Lineker was full of praise for his old side:

Kane redeemed himself after the break as he netted his brace with a low drive past Adrian from outside the area after James Tomkins carelessly gave away possession in his defensive third.

Heung-Min Son and Eriksen forced an outstanding double save from Adrian immediately after, but Spurs then struggled to create many clear-cut chances, though they remained by far the better team.

Spurs were still able to find a fourth, though, when Walker drove forward towards goal and played a one-two with Son before bending an excellent effort around Adrian with the outside of his boot.

Lanzini hit back with a powerful effort late on, but there was no hint of a comeback from the sub-par visitors.

On Saturday, Liverpool recorded a memorable victory at the Etihad Stadium.

A clumsy Eliaquim Mangala own goal and two tap-ins following lovely moves for Philippe Coutinho and Roberto Firmino gave the Reds a comfortable lead as they pressed magnificently in true Jurgen Klopp style.

Football writer Jack Lusby noted the way the team are evolving under the German:

A delightful effort from distance by Sergio Aguero gave the Citizens some brief hope, but Martin Skrtel's venomous volley rounded out the scoring for Liverpool.

Fellow contenders Arsenal also lost despite taking the lead against West Bromwich Albion through an Olivier Giroud header.

A volley from James Morrison and an own goal from Mikel Arteta gave the Baggies the lead, and they were able to hang on for the win despite giving away a penalty as Santi Cazorla slipped and sent it ballooning over the crossbar.

Their results allowed Leicester City to move to the top of the table as they comfortably saw off Newcastle.

Jamie Vardy continued his incredible goalscoring run and equalled Ruud van nistelrooy's record of scoring in 10 consecutive Premier League games, before Leonardo Ulloa and Shinji Okazaki took full advantage of some typically dreadful Magpies defending to complete the win.

Squawka Football appropriately gave the Foxes the moniker that used to belong to Newcastle once upon a time:

Manchester United also made progress as they beat Watford despite missing several key players including Wayne Rooney and Anthony Martial.

Memphis Depay opened the scoring with a lovely volley, but the Hornets looked to have snatched a point late on thanks to Troy Deeney's goal from the penalty spot. However, the striker was unable to keep out Bastian Schweinsteiger's close-range, last-minute effort and ultimately carried the ball over the line for an own goal and a United win.

Chelsea halted their slide down the table with a 1-0 win over Norwich City thanks to Diego Costa's goal, while Bojan Krkic earned Stoke City an impressive victory away at Southampton by the same scoreline.

Everton ran riot at home to Aston Villa, with Ross Barkley and Romelu Lukaku each bagging braces.

The Times' Tony Barrett noted the way the Toffees carved through Villa time and again, with their top performers all getting involved in some lovely team moves:

Lastly, Bournemouth were unable to secure a vital three points at the Liberty Stadium despite taking a 2-0 lead over Swansea City.

Josh King and Dan Gosling netted for the Cherries in the first half, but an exquisite backheel from Andre Ayew and a controversial Jonjo Shelvey penalty levelled the scores before the break.

Bournemouth dominated for much of the second half, but they were unable to finish any of their chances. With the likes of Newcastle, Villa and Sunderland also struggling, those dropped points could prove vital come the end of the season.

The fight for survival is as tight as the race at the top, so Bournemouth—and the teams around them—need to take advantage when presented with such golden opportunities to win, particularly as their next three fixtures are against Everton, Chelsea and Manchester United.
