Sean Maguire Named FSU Starting QB over Everett Golson
Florida State head coach Jimbo Fisher confirmed Monday that quarterback Sean Maguire would get the start against Chattanooga over Everett Golson.
“(Maguire) will start this week,” Fisher told Warchant.com, via Sam Cooper of Yahoo Sports. “Yes, he will.”
Fisher later told reporters that Maguire will be the starter "moving forward."
Maguire replaced Golson Saturday against NC State after the Notre Dame transfer struggled, turning the ball over three times. Maguire took over and threw for 231 yards, two touchdowns and an interception, erasing a 10-point deficit and leading the Seminoles to a 34-17 win.
Golson was the team's starter for the first seven games of the season but missed two contests after suffering a concussion and showed rust against NC State. Maguire has played well when called upon, meanwhile, throwing for 816 yards, six touchdowns and two interceptions. And he clearly was the better player Saturday.
“The energy grew," Fisher said of Maguire coming into the game. "He was being vocal, being a leader. And then all of our guys got that bounce and got some urgency and he was the spark. He made a couple really nice plays under pressure. The guys appreciated that.”
While a game against Chattanooga should be a gimme, the Seminoles close the season against Florida in a matchup that will have huge implications for the team's postseason status, which will truly put Maguire to the test.
