La Liga Table 2015 Week 11: Updated Standings Following Friday's Results

Tom SunderlandNov 6, 2015

Real Sociedad's struggles continued on Friday evening after a 2-0 defeat at Las Palmas left David Moyes' side lingering just three points from the bottom of La Liga.

Las Palmas are now level on points with La Real, who have lost four of their last five matches under the former Manchester United manager as doubt grows in his ability to lead the club.

Third-place Celta Vigo are in action on Saturday as they look to defeat underperforming Valencia and move level on points with league leaders Real Madrid, who don't face Sevilla until Sunday evening. Before then, Barcelona will have their chance to move clear at the summit if they can beat fourth-place Villarreal at the Camp Nou, but the Yellow Submarine won't be dispatched with any ease.

Recap

Las Palmas had won just one of their 10 league fixtures this season coming into Friday's meeting, a clash that promised to pull them further from La Liga's base should they manage to capture all three points on offer. And Los Amarillos took their chance to climb one place to 18th thanks to goals from Jonathan Viera and Sergio Araujo either side of half-time and clinch their second victory of the season.

Former Liverpool winger Nabil El Zhar was among the star players for Las Palmas in arguably their most convincing display of the term so far, but it was Vicente Gomez who teed up Viera for the game's opener on 28 minutes.

According to OptaJose, that was the hosts' first shot on target of the evening, showing a clinical touch they've struggled to demonstrate in recent months:

Moyes' side were by no means out of the fixture, though, and headed in at the break with a chance to take a share of the spoils, a sentiment shared by ESPN FC's Dermot Corrigan:

By all means, the visiting party should have threatened more, considering they enjoyed a greater share of possession and attempts on goal, per WhoScored.com, but striker Imanol Agirretxe was struggling to find chances on goal.

It took just six minutes of the second period for Araujo to double Las Palmas' lead and send Moyes' hopes spiralling, at which point Kieran Canning of Agence France-Presse teased the thought of a return to England:

Las Palmas centre-backs Pedro Bigas and Aythami Artiles were impressive holding Sociedad at bay for the most part, but this was a display of the visitors' shortcomings more than anything else.

The result means Moyes' side could fall into the bottom three for the first time this season depending on this weekend's results, while Las Palmas claim their prize in what could come to be a massive result in their pledge for survival.
