Tuesday Recap
United dominated their match with CSKA but were unable to take their chances.
The Red Devils had 13 corners and 12 efforts on goal, with five hitting the target, but they were denied at every turn by goalkeeper Ilya Pomazun.
Meanwhile, the visitors barely created anything of note but will be content with their point, which leaves them atop Group B.
In Madrid's match, Jose Lazo opened the scoring for Los Blancos after 22 minutes. Felix Eboa Eboa fouled Borja Mayoral on the edge of the penalty area, and before Les Parisiens' defence could organise, Cristian Cedres had slipped the ball through to the winger, who calmly tucked the ball past Remy Descamps.
The visitors fought hard to find a way back into the match, but despite 12 attempts, they could not breach Real's goal due to some profligate finishing.
Mayoral made sure of the win shortly before the hour mark when he tapped home Lazo's squared ball across, with UEFA reporter Joseph Walker noting it came against the run of play:
Real's city rivals, Atletico, had an even better day at the office thanks to a flurry of second-half goals.
Los Rojiblancos were just 3-0 up at half-time after goals from Ignacio Heras, Nunez and Andres Mohedano, but an incredible start after the break saw them rack up their tally to nine.
Theo grabbed a goal seven minutes into the half before two goals in the 57th minute gave Nunez his hat-trick. Jamie Almagro and Carlos Isaac got in on the action before Nunez wrapped up the thrashing with his fourth. The club shared the reaction of youth coach Oscar Fernandez after the match:
Atletico remain second in the group, though, as Benfica made it four wins from four in a 2-0 victory over Galatasaray, thanks to goals from Oliver Sarkic and Joao Carvalho.
In Group D, Manchester City gave themselves a commanding lead by beating closest rivals Sevilla, courtesy of a brace from Thierry Ambrose.
The Sky Blues were further aided by Juventus' defeat at the hands of Monchengladbach. The German side took a 3-0 lead thanks to a brace from Tsiy-William Ndenge and a tally from Joshua Holtby, but a late rally from the Bianconeri saw both Francesco Cassata and Grigoris Kastanos score in injury time.
It was not enough, though, and Monchengladbach earned their first win of the campaign. The results guarantee City a place in the next round, as they are now three points clear at the top with two games remaining. They have an excellent chance of avoiding the play-off to enter the round of 16.
