Jeremiah Ratliff Allegedly Threatened Bears Employees Prior to Release

Tim DanielsOct 30, 2015

Former Chicago Bears defensive lineman Jeremiah Ratliff reportedly called himself the devil and told team staffers he wished their children would die, one day before he was released on Oct. 22.

TMZ Sports obtained a police report providing details of the incident, during which Ratliff is alleged to have told somebody "he felt like killing everybody in the building." He hasn't been charged with a crime, however.

The police report also states Bears officials expressed concern for the safety of the staff because they believe Ratliff owns multiple firearms. The team requested a police presence for the rest of the day, and there were no further problems, per TMZ Sports.

The Associated Press reports the troublesome comments came on the same day the lineman was seen having a heated discussion with general manager Ryan Pace in the parking lot. Head coach John Fox reiterated Friday that people in the facility were worried.

"As I commented early in the week, we were concerned for the building and that's why the police were called," Fox said.

Ratliff's agent, Mark Slough, released a statement on the allegations, per Bleacher Report's Mike Freeman:

"

"Jeremiah has no recollection or memory of saying anything that has been reported in the police report. Jeremiah is receiving care in Dallas for a football- related medical condition that arose out of the game on the 18th with Detroit. The primary focus right now is on Jeremiah’s cognitive health. I would also like to reiterate that the reports that Jeremiah showed up at Halas Hall inebriated are utterly and completely false."

"

David Moore of the Dallas Morning News noted Wednesday that Bears officials contacted the Dallas Cowboys to warn them Ratliff may be returning home near Valley Ranch, Texas. The Cowboys did not receive any threats, but Chicago opted to make a precautionary call.

Moore noted Ratliff had a heated argument with Dallas owner Jerry Jones in 2012. He was let go amid injury issues in 2013, with the team later trying to recoup a portion of his signing bonus, according to the Dallas Morning News report.

Ratliff appeared in two games for the Bears this season. He registered eight combined tackles and no sacks after tallying 6.5 sacks in 11 games one year ago.

He's remained a free agent since the Bears released him last week. At 34, his peak on-field productivity is a thing of the past, and these allegations will force teams to think twice before reaching out to potentially sign him.
