Sunday Recap

Life for new Magpies boss Steve McClaren has been stressful in recent weeks, with his Newcastle team looking weak and tepid, and sure-fire relegation candidates.

However, their one hit of the season has been new signing Wijnaldum, a summer signing from PSV who has looked much better than his team-mates on a weekly basis.

The Dutchman joined an elite goalscoring club with his four goals against the Canaries, as highlighted by Squawka.com:

Wijnaldum became the club's third-most costly signing at £14.5 million after arriving at St James' Park behind Alan Shearer and Michael Owen, per Shamoon Hafez of BBC Sport, but repaid a large wedge of the fee as the Geordies finally had something to sing about.

The midfielder opened his account after 14 minutes with a composed side-footed effort—and doubled his takings only 12 minutes later as he glanced his second home.

The player grabbed his hat-trick just after the hour mark, finishing a great counterattack by the hosts, once again heading home to all but seal the points.

However, the night wasn't over for Wijnaldum, who scored a spectacular fourth in the dying embers of the match. Norwich were caught on the counter once again, and the player saw his long-range shot deflected for an unexpected goal haul.

Football presenter and former predatory striker Gary Lineker tipped his hat toward the Newcastle star:

Despite his efforts, Wijnaldum sits three goals short of Premier League top goalscorer Jamie Vardy.

The Leicester City striker is in the form of his life after breaking into the full England squad, hammering nine goals past top-class opposition for the Foxes this season.

Wijnaldum could be one of the buys of the summer, as McClaren looks to drive his team into mid-table safety.

The 24-year-old has been impressive for the Netherlands since the last World Cup, where he performed to a high standard, and now he has a global platform to show off his talents every week.

This could be the start of the Magpies' season in earnest, obtaining a vital win when it seemed they were spiralling.

Wijnaldum and Moussa Sissoko's combined link up play was the key against Norwich, and if they can maintain this form they will be out of the relegation zone in no time at all.
