Justin Turner Ties Record with 6 Doubles in Postseason Series

Bleacher Report MilestonesOct 16, 2015

Los Angeles Dodgers third baseman Justin Turner tied an MLB record for most doubles in a postseason series, smacking his fifth and six two-baggers of the National League Division Series during Thursday's 3-2 Game 5 loss to the New York Mets, per MLB Stat of the Day.

Despite putting up 10 hits in 19 at-bats for a .526 batting average, Turner finished the series with modest totals of two runs and four RBI, as the Dodgers otherwise struggled against a tough Mets pitching staff, scoring three or fewer runs in three of the five games.

Turner had at least one hit in every game, including a double in every contest besides Game 3, with multi-hit efforts in every contest besides Game 4.

Though his team has a slew of better-known players, Turner was surprisingly one of the more valuable Dodgers even before the playoffs, as he finished the regular season with a .294/.370/.491 batting line, boosting his career line to .284/.351/.419.

He brings extra value with his ability to play every spot in the infield, and his 4.0 wins above replacement (WAR) during the regular season led all Dodgers position players, per Fangraphs' measurement of the statistic.

Despite logging just 439 plate appearances, Turner finished well ahead of first baseman Adrian Gonzalez, who had 3.0 WAR over 643 plate appearances.

As for the doubles record, it was previously set by Pete Fox in the 1934 World Series, then matched by Hideki Matsui in the 2004 ALCS.
