According to Fox Sports' Mike Garafolo, the Bills put Williams on injured reserve with the designation to return and signed Josh Bush to take his spot.
Per the Bills' official website, Williams will be eligible to play in Week 14 against the Philadelphia Eagles. The 25-year-old was originally injured during Buffalo's Week 2 loss against the New England Patriots, as his head and neck snapped backward while he was trying to tackle Patriots receiver Julian Edelman. He was taken off the field in an ambulance.
Williams returned for Buffalo's Week 5 victory over the Tennessee Titans, recording five tackles, but the report from the team's site notes he had "instances" in which he was shaking out his left arm following plays.
Bills head coach Rex Ryan knows Bush well, as the two were together for more than two seasons in New York from 2012-14, before Bush was released in October 2014.
Buffalo is off to a 3-2 start this season despite key players like LeSean McCoy and Sammy Watkins missing games due to injuries.
Williams has been the Bills' primary starter at strong safety since 2013, though he's never played a full 16-game season since entering the league in 2011. His absence is another hurdle the team will have to overcome, though Ryan was able to find a replacement he has some rapport with to get by.
