USA vs. Costa Rica: Date, Time, Live Stream and 2015 Friendly Preview

Rob BlanchetteOct 12, 2015

After the indignation of defeat to bitter rivals Mexico, the United States host an ambitious Costa Rica at the Red Bull Arena in Harrison, New Jersey.

USMNT were beaten 3-2 in extra-time against the Mexican team at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California, on Saturday, leaving coach Jurgen Klinsmann's position in doubt, and denying his side a place in the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup in Russia.

Costa Rica have taken great strides in recent years, reaching the quarter-finals of the World Cup in Brazil.

Match Preview

The United States are at a crossroads, and Klinsmann's time as manager is hanging in the balance. They have gone from their World Cup highs to local humiliation in just over a year, with the direction of the ship heading toward the icebergs after one win from their last five games.

Klinsmann had previously met Mexico on six occasions and not lost, according to Andrew Das of the New York Times, but just when he needed a morale-boosting win, his side once again capitulated, just as they did at the CONCACAF Gold Cup.

The German has rung the changes for the match against Costa Rica, facing a side who grabbed new levels of success to reach the last eight of the world's biggest football competition.

Into the USA squad come goalkeeper Bill Hamid of D.C. United, midfield duo Mix Diskerud and Lee Nguyen, Orlando City's Brek Shea and German-born forward Andrew Wooten, as reported by USSoccer.com.

Klinsmann desperately needs to freshen up his approach if he is to survive as coach, but his selection options look average at best.

Eight players have been dropped out of the squad, per US Soccer, including captain Michael Bradley and veteran Clint Dempsey, with the coach rolling the dice to find a new formula.

The 51-year-old is clearly feeling the pressure, but was in a bombastic mood when addressing his issues to the press after the defeat to El Tri, as cited by Soccerway.com:

"

Everybody can express his opinion, and not everyone likes you. That's totally fine. I'm not here to be liked, I'm trying to do a good job and I'm privileged to have that role and represent the U.S. soccer program. It's a privilege for me. I do my best, to my capabilities, and leave the judgment out there for you guys and for people who want to express themselves.

We have to sit together and discuss things: Who we're counting on, how we want to build towards the next couple games, and there's not much time. That will be a lot of conversations coming up the next couple days.

"

Costa Rica were also defeated in their last game—losing 1-0 at home to South Africa at the weekend. Skipper Bryan Ruiz has been released from the squad ahead of the clash in New Jersey, per Soccerway, while midfielder Yeltsin Tejeda is also out due to injury, with Junior Diaz unavailable, constricting La Sele's options.

This game shouldn't be a make-or-break match for Kilnsmann, but the focus is intense on a game which should have little significance.

Costa Rica beat USMNT in their last game in 2013, prevailing 3-1 in a World Cup qualifier, per Soccerway, but revenge is not the motivation for the Stars and Stripes as they look to get their house in order.

Without Bradley and Dempsey, the USA are short on experience and leadership—and with the Costa Ricans enjoying the role of underdog, they should thrive against a disjointed American team at the Red Bull Arena.
