Doug Martin, Jameis Winston, Mike Evans, Charles Sims Post-Week 5 Fantasy Advice

Matt FitzgeraldOct 11, 2015

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers engaged in a Sunshine State shootout with the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 5, leaving fantasy owners rather pleased in the process.

Running back Doug Martin may be in the midst of a resurgent 2015 campaign if his three touchdowns in Sunday's 38-31 victory are any indication. The better Martin and his backup, Charles Sims, are, the more the passing game opens up for rookie quarterback Jameis Winston and his top target, Mike Evans.

Below is fantasy advice for all the aforementioned Bucs players, who exploited a hapless Jaguars defense in a season-saving victory.

Doug Martin

The Martin who took the NFL by storm in 2012 has been absent over two previous injury-plagued years. Now it seems he's keen to reassert himself as Tampa Bay's feature back and a regular fixture in fantasy lineups for the rest of the season.

After carving up the Carolina Panthers for over 100 yards rushing in Week 4, Martin kept his roll going with three trips to paydirt versus Jacksonville. Opponents are going to have to crowd the box in the coming weeks to account for his return to form.

Even though more attention will be paid to Martin in the coming games, he has enough elusiveness and pass-catching ability to be recommended as a weekly fantasy starter. Don't be surprised if he continues to produce as an RB1, because he's proved capable of doing so before when healthy.

Jameis Winston

Tampa Bay leaned heavily on the run, which ought to be the priority with a green signal-caller in Winston under center.

Some believed Winston's numerous turnovers in his final year at Florida State weren't all on him. After four interceptions in Week 4, he took better care of the ball, yet he attempted only 19 passes—an indication of the Bucs' lack of trust in him to air it out often and still win.

Fantasy owners should be equally wary when debating about Winston's status every week. He's a fringe QB2 option in certain fantasy formats, but he can't be counted on to produce among the league's elite at his position right now.

Mike Evans

The former first-round pick didn't hit a rookie wall—he actually thrived amid adverse circumstances. Now opponents seem to have figured out how to stop Evans, though.

NFL.com's Matt Harmon made an observation, as Evans was a minimal contributor to an offense that lit up the scoreboard often in Week 5:

Evans still figures to be Winston's No. 1 target, but Tampa Bay's backs figure to become bigger factors in the passing game in the coming weeks. As long as teams roll coverage Evans' way, he'll have a hard time producing on a consistent basis.

If the Bucs play from behind, Winston will have no choice but to throw the ball a lot. At the very least, that will make Evans a decent WR2 play in most weeks.

Charles Sims

With how well Martin is playing, it's going to be tough for Sims to steal touches away. He managed to do so in Week 5, though, and given Martin's injury history, it'd behoove the Bucs to give Martin some rest as the workhorse.

Sims has proved to be particularly effective in obvious passing situations, capable of leaking out of the backfield and generating yards after the catch. In order to increase his fantasy value beyond a fringe flex choice, though, he must run the ball better.

Entering Sunday's game, Sims' career yards per carry was 3.0 on 91 attempts. He'll have to build on what he did in Week 5, but even that may not be enough to carve out decent fantasy value. At least Sims has emerged as the superior handcuff option over Bobby Rainey this season.
