China Open 2015: Wednesday Tennis Scores, Results and Latest Draw Schedule

Matt JonesOct 7, 2015

Rafael Nadal has moved into the quarter-finals of the China Open, beating Vasek Pospisil in straight sets on Wednesday.

The Spaniard turned in a rounded performance in this one and will face young American Jack Sock in the last eight of the tournament.

Earlier in the day, we were treated to a big shock, as Pablo Cuevas dumped out second seed Tomas Berdych in straight sets; fourth seed David Ferrer came through in style in his match.

Nadal Too Strong for Gutsy Pospisil

Pospisil and Nadal were evenly matched in a very tight opening set, neither able to force a crucial break as both looked comfortable behind their respective serves.

The No. 3 seeded Spaniard had the advantage of serving first, but he could not take the opener at either 5-4 or 6-5 in front.

A tiebreak was necessary to split the two, and Nadal proved to have the better temperament as he took it 7-3 after picking up an early mini-break, per Live Tennis:

The start of the second set was similarly close, but Pospisil finally buckled as he threw in a poor service game and Nadal broke for 3-2.

The world No. 8 saw out the match despite a spirited effort in the final game from Pospisil, and he takes his place in the last eight.

Elsewhere, fresh from his win at the Shenzhen Open, there were big things expected of Berdych. But he was completely outplayed by Cuevas, who was able to nullify the Czech’s thunderous serve and take a very impressive 6-4, 6-4 win.

The tournament in Shenzhen only finished on Monday, and one might wonder whether Berdych had enough time to recuperate between the two competitions. Freelance tennis writer Sean Calvert certainly doesn’t think so:

Ferrer is a player who will be hopeful of making it to the ATP Tour Finals in London at the end of the year, and he did his chances no harm whatsoever with a positive outing against Lukas Rosol.

The Spaniard was made to work hard in the opening exchanges, as Rosol showed his obdurateness by taking the first set to a tiebreak. Even then, there was little between the pair, but Ferrer eventually showed his class to take it 7-5.

As is so often the case, that knocked the stuffing out of the underdog, allowing the fourth seed a comfortable 6-2 win in the second set.

As noted by Hannah Wilks of LiveTennis.com, the Spaniard, who will face Yen-Hsun Lu next, looked as though he really enjoyed this victory:

In the women’s matches, fans were treated to more absorbing action, as Wozniacki was dispatched by a super showing from Kerber.

The German, seeded 10th for this one, didn’t give her opponent any time to settle into a rhythm, winning the first set 6-2.

Wozniacki, who was seeded eighth, had no answer for Kerber’s intensity in the first set. That wasn’t about to change in the second, as the German remained relentless, winning it 6-3.

As noted by WTA Insider, it was a pretty sensational display from Kerber, who will face Radwanska next:

The fourth seed was looking strong in the opening set of her match against Madison Keys, but the American withdrew with a thigh injury before the second stanza got underway.

Hoping to eventually join the aforementioned pair in the last eight will be Muguruza, who was far too good for qualifier Irina Falconi, winning 6-2, 6-1 in Round 2.

Meanwhile, away from the courts, world No. 1 Novak Djokovic undertook some interesting preparations for his match with Ze Zhang on Wednesday, as he shared on his Twitter feed:

The Serb was going to be very difficult to halt at this tournament, having won it five times already; without Berdych, Djokovic is now the overwhelming favourite for the men’s title, although the local wild card will be hoping that he can turn in the display of his life with a boisterous Beijing crowd backing him.
