Christopher SimpsonOct 7, 2015

Top seed Stan Wawrinka eased into the quarter-finals of the 2015 Japan Open, but he needed three sets to overcome Tatsuma Ito on Wednesday.

Local favourite Kei Nishikori sailed through against American Sam Querrey, but there will be no place for Feliciano Lopez as he succumbed to a defeat against Joao Sousa in their match.

Third-seed Gilles Simon and sixth-seed Marin Cilic also progressed to the next round as they overcame Jiri Vesely and Donald Young respectively.

Wawrinka Through to Quarter-Finals in Three Sets

Wawrinka eased through the opening set 6-3, but the match wasn't as straightforward as it should have been from that position.

The Swiss star was broken twice in the second set by a resurgent Ito who saw out the set 6-2, even breaking Wawrinka in the final game to 15.

However, two early breaks in the third stanza set the 30-year-old on course to a 6-3, 2-6, 6-4 triumph.

Querrey admirably held Nishikori to a tiebreaker in the opening set, but the second-seed's quality soon told as he broke the American twice in the second to progress in one hour and 13 minutes.

The Japanese star will likely face Cilic in a mouthwatering quarter-final against an opponent who has won just three of their nine meetings, provided the Croatian overcomes Steve Johnson.

The sixth-seed beat qualifier Young in a lengthy three-set battle as the American showed great resilience in holding off his illustrious opponent. TennisTV share the key stats:

In his second-round match, Simon swept aside Vesely 6-4, 6-2 to comfortably advance to the quarter-finals.

A tight contest between Gilles Muller and Jeremy Chardy saw the former triumph in straight sets, both times via a tiebreaker as he won 7-6 (3), 7-6 (5).

Lopez made Sousa—eight years the Spaniard's juniorwork for his victory in three sets, but he tailed off badly to lose 6-4, 4-6, 6-1.

Sousa plays Austin Krajicek in the second round and has an excellent chance of progressing to the quarter-finals against the American, who sits 79 places below the Portuguese player in the ATP rankings.
