Rob BlanchetteSep 27, 2015

Deportivo La Coruna continued their fine start to the La Liga season, beating Espanyol 3-0 at the Riazor.

An own goal by Alvaro Gonzalez and two strikes from Lucas Perez were enough to give the hosts the win, as Depor hold sixth place in the table.

Getafe put in a strong performance to pull away from the relegation zone, with three goals in the final nine minutes giving them victory at home to Levante.

Sunday Recap

It was an entertainment-packed Sunday in La Liga, as the country's less-fashionable teams put on a spectacle.

Deportivo's renaissance continued—after last year's relegation struggle—with a convincing result at Gijon. The Turks grabbed a 3-0 win at El Molinon to keep up with Spain's best performing sides.

An Alvaro own goal set the visitors on their way to the win in only the 14th minute, heading a Depor set piece past his goalkeeper from a curling free-kick—with his team-mates looking in with disdain in their eyes.

The lead was soon doubled, just 13 minutes later, when a flying counter-attack took the Turks from one end of the pitch to the other, with Perez finishing with deadly precision.

The game was wrapped up just after the restart from the half-time break, as Perez ended the match as a contest. The player met a delicious cross to tap the ball over the line, as the Gijon defence watched helplessly.

Football writer Joseph Musker praised Depor's Luis Alberto for his performance and spoke about his recent statistics:

It was a great day for Getafe as they took the points against Levante—but left it until the 81st minute to get their goalscoring show on the road in a 3-0 victory.

Alvaro Vazquez headed home Damian Suarez's cross to break the deadlock, forcing Levante to go looking for a desperate equaliser.

Vazquez then turned provider in stoppage time as Argentine teenager Emi sealed the win after a quick breakaway.

There was still enough time for the excellent Vazquez to take a brace, running through and lifting his shot into the roof of the net.

It was a bad day at the office for Gijon, as they succumbed 2-1 to Betis after taking the lead at home. Carlos Castro Garcia's left-footed shot gave the Rojiblancos the lead early in the first half, but Joaquin's close-range header tied the match just after the break.

It was left to 34-year-old attacker Ruben Castro Martin to take the three points, latching onto a long ball and producing a blockbuster strike to claim one of the early goals of the season.

The final game of the day produced a poor match in the Basque derby, as Sociedad and Athletic Bilbao drew 0-0. Moyes' boys have only conceded one goal in their opening six games, but they are gaining a reputation for boring football.

OptaJose highlighted Sociedad's recent success in the derby match:

Moyes has moulded Sociedad into a replica of his former club Everton, with his team economical with the ball rather than explosive.

This style might gain success in La Liga, with its slower buildup and technical play, but it's certainly a tough watch for Sociedad fans, week after week.
