NCAA Football Rankings 2015: Week 5 Standings and Analysis for Latest Polls

Rob GoldbergSep 28, 2015

Even without many changes to the Top 10, a few West Coast blowouts helped change the perception for a number of college football teams heading into Week 5.

Utah surprised almost everyone with a dominant road performance at Oregon, while UCLA easily handled Arizona on the road. USC also had a nice bounce-back showing against previously ranked Arizona State.

These games paired with a bunch of scares for top teams led to a brand-new Top 25. Here is a look at the latest rankings from the Associated Press, USA Today and Bleacher Report.

Utah was arguably the biggest winner of the day thanks to a 62-20 annihilation of Oregon. The Utes had a 20-13 lead in the second quarter before pulling away with 42 unanswered points, led in most part by quarterback Travis Wilson and his five total scores.

The loss was one of the worst the Ducks have seen in years, and the drop in the polls (or out of the polls) reflects that. However, the bigger story was what would happen to Utah's ranking after its 4-0 start. It seems the jump wasn't enough to make people happy, such as Bruce Feldman of Fox Sports:

Clay Travis of Outkick the Coverage went a step further to compare the resume to another top team in the AP poll:

The reason for comparison is the common opponent against Oregon. This was both Michigan State's and Utah's best win, but while the Spartans barely held on by three at home, the Utes earned a blowout victory on the road. Add in a solid win over Michigan, and Kyle Whittingham's team arguably deserves to be much higher.

UCLA is another team that might need more respect after an easy 56-30 road victory over Arizona. Running backs Paul Perkins and Soso Jamabo helped key a dominant rushing attack that totaled 213 yards and six touchdowns in the win. Freshman quarterback Josh Rosen also came through with an efficient performance and a total quarterback rating of 96.9 out of 100.

Despite the offensive success, head coach Jim Mora Jr. couldn't overlook the defense that allowed 353 yards on the ground. According to Matthew Joye of the Daily Bruin, the head coach said after the game:

"

For a team to be able to run the ball like that on us – it’s inconceivable. It makes me sick to my stomach.

[...]

I’m just disappointed (with the run defense). It started with me and as a staff we’re disappointed, and as players we’re very disappointed.

[...]

We don’t expect the ball to ever, ever, ever get the ball run on us like that – ever, ever. It’s unacceptable and it will not happen again.

"

As well as UCLA played, it's good to remain focused on the rest of the season with so many tough matchups remaining on the schedule. The Bruins are looking like an early contender for the College Football Playoff, but road games against Stanford, Utah and USC can make it difficult if they don't play to their ability every week.

Among the more disappointing performances of the week was a team that actually ended up winning. TCU survived a scare against Texas Tech and came away with a 55-52 victory thanks to some last-minute drama:

Even with a 4-0 record, the Horned Frogs have been slowly moving down the polls from their preseason spot of No. 2. Along with fellow Big 12 contender Baylor, an undefeated record hasn't been enough to convince voters.

Joel Klatt of Fox Sports even admitted he doesn't like his own ballot thanks to these teams:

Hopefully we will learn a lot more about these teams once the conference schedule kicks in, but for now the two programs will remain in the Top 10.

Other than some relatively tough challenges for SEC squads LSU and Ole Miss, Week 4 was quiet for the top teams in the nation. That might not necessarily be the case next weekend when conference play gets into full swing.

Between Oklahoma-West Virginia, Alabama-Georgia, Ole Miss-Florida, Mississippi State-Texas A&M and Notre Dame-Clemson, there could be a lot of drama and eventually a lot of movement in the rankings.

With all of these teams and more still hoping to earn a playoff spot, the excitement is just getting started.
