Analysis

Every national championship contender survives a close call or two on the road to the postseason. TCU hopes it got its close call out of the way Saturday.

The Horned Frogs scored a touchdown on a tipped pass that amazingly landed in the hands of Aaron Green in the back of the end zone with just 23 seconds remaining against Texas Tech. The 55-52 contest was one of the most exciting games to date in the young season.

ESPN Stats & Info shared a video of the crazy play:

Afterward, Green recounted the play that kept TCU firmly in the playoff hunt, via ESPN:

"

You never know with the ball. Somebody might fumble or anything like that. So I knew there was a chance. Josh Doctson catches almost everything, but there's a chance. I knew he might not have caught it because it was a little high, and the guy was behind him. So I just did what I was told, and I followed the ball. I saw it the whole way, and I caught it.

"

The Horned Frogs' win was highlighted by a pair of insane individual performances. Doctson went off, catching 18 passes for 267 yards and three touchdowns, while quarterback Trevone Boykin threw for 485 yards and four touchdowns and added 42 rushing yards.

Of course, Boykin's final pass wasn't his best, as Pat Forde of Yahoo Sports pointed out:

Sometimes, it's better to be lucky than good.

TCU's wild win highlighted a week in which the top contenders for the College Football Playoff avoided rankings-busting upsets, though Georgia Tech, BYU and Missouri all lost. On the other hand, few top teams impressed as much as UCLA, as the Bruins made a statement with a 56-30 spanking of Arizona.

Few teams disappointed as much as Oregon, as Utah ended the Ducks' playoff chances with a stunning 62-20 win. Marcus Mariota isn't walking through that door, Oregon fans.

Conference play heats up this week, so the rankings could be sent into turmoil after big matchups like Stanford hosting Arizona, Alabama visiting Georgia and Notre Dame at Clemson.

Meanwhile, teams like TCU will simply be looking to avoid major upsets and hoping—praying even—that any tipped passes go their way.
