Utah vs. Oregon: Score, Highlights and Twitter Reaction
The No. 18 Utah Utes marched into Saturday's matchup with the No. 13 Oregon Ducks seeking their first win in a Pac-12 opener since joining the conference in 2011, and they achieved that goal in style with a 62-20 drubbing of the Ducks at Autzen Stadium.
Oregon (2-2) has now lost two games in the month of September for the first time since 2004, per the Oregonian's Andrew Greif.
Utah (4-0) dictated the tempo all night long, and a 21-point second quarter that put the Utes up 27-13 entering halftime staggered Oregon severely. Utah piled on 14 quick points after halftime that sent the Ducks stumbling to the canvas.
Head coach Kyle Whittingham's side ended the night with a 130-yard advantage in total offense (530-400) and outscored the opposition 35-7 in the second half.
The Utes even poured it on by letting running back Devontae Booker (22 carries, 98 yards) toss a 25-yard touchdown pass, per the Pac-12 Networks on Twitter:
In a battle between banged-up quarterbacks, Utah's Travis Wilson outlasted Oregon's Vernon Adams Jr. Wilson was a game-time decision because of a shoulder injury that kept him out of last week's win over Fresno State, while Adams earned the same designation after resting with a broken index finger a week ago against Georgia State.
However, Adams didn't make it through the first half and was benched in favor of backup Jeff Lockie. The graduate transfer completed two of seven passes for 26 yards, but the broken finger didn't seem to have much to do with it, per Fox Sports' Stewart Mandel:
Lockie entered and promptly led the Ducks to the end zone, but that was his only highlight. Conversely, Wilson shredded a shaky Oregon defense that was in shambles all night. Not only did the senior signal-caller rip Oregon through the air, but he also peppered in read-option runs that produced a couple of wide-open scampers.
| Travis Wilson | 18 | 30 | 227 | 4 | 0 | 100 | 1 |
| Jeff Lockie | 10 | 20 | 139 | 1 | 2 | 37 | 0 |
| Vernon Adams | 2 | 7 | 26 | 1 | 0 | 5 | 0 |
"We're no longer the team that will sneak up on people," Utah wide receiver Kenneth Scott said earlier in the week, according to the Deseret News' Dirk Facer. "We're actually known now."
While Oregon's offense sputtered early with Adams back under center, Utah was able to capitalize on good field position throughout most of the first quarter en route to grabbing a 6-0 lead.
A 13-yard touchdown pass from Adams to Royce Freeman drew things even, as the Pac-12 Networks relayed, but the Ducks faded from that point on.
One of the lone highlights for Oregon was the play of defensive lineman DeForest Buckner, who stood out up front.
Former Oregon offensive lineman and Chicago Bears right tackle Kyle Long didn't take long to notice Buckner's dominant demeanor:
But even though the defensive line was solid for spurts, the secondary was an objective disaster after head coach Mark Helfrich decided to shake up the depth chart on the back end. According to the Register-Guard's Ryan Thorburn, Oregon debuted a new secondary that consisted of Glen Ihenacho and Ugo Amadi at cornerback and Tyree Robinson and Juwaan Williams at safety.
Wilson tossed a second-quarter touchdown that exemplified some of the unit's glaring deficiencies in coverage, per the Pac-12 Networks:
Breakdowns like those became a familiar sight throughout the evening. Wilson repeatedly targeted Oregon's young and inexperienced corners, and the strategy paid major dividends.
If Wilson can build on Saturday's performance, the rest of the country will be forced to take Utah seriously as a College Football Playoff contender. But as Fox Sports' Bruce Feldman opined, Utah may already be in the country's elite discussion:
A leap up in the Associated Press Top 25 is coming, and the Utes can continue proving they're for real with a win at home next week against Jared Goff and the California Golden Bears before the Arizona State Sun Devils come to town.
