Texas A&M vs. Arkansas: Score, Highlights and Twitter Reaction
Kyle Allen's 20-yard touchdown pass to Christian Kirk in overtime lifted the No. 14 Texas A&M Aggies (4-0) to a 28-21 victory over the Arkansas Razorbacks (1-3) on Saturday night.
David Ubben shared footage of A&M's winning touchdown:
Kirk, only a freshman, has been electrifying in these first four games, making big plays both as a receiver and as a punt returner. But on Saturday night against Arkansas, he did it all as a No. 1 receiver, hauling in eight catches for 173 yards.
Texas A&M's alumni network kept it short and sweet when trying to describe Kirk's performance:
The touchdown on the first possession of overtime called for A&M to hold down an Arkansas offense that put up over 450 yards. The Aggies succeeded, getting the win by forcing a turnover on downs.
Arkansas has now lost three straight games, with its latest letdown arriving via a blown 21-13 fourth-quarter lead with less than four minutes remaining.
After Texas A&M tied the game with 2:50 left, Arkansas drove down the field thanks to running back Alex Collins. But as the drive neared midfield, he was shaken up and forced to leave the game. Two snaps later, quarterback Brandon Allen put the ball on the ground with 1:04 left, and A&M recovered it on the Razorbacks 42-yard line.
The Aggies were gifted 15 free yards after a roughing-the-passer penalty put the team in field-goal position. But with three seconds left, kicker Taylor Bertolet pulled the game-winning 38-yard field-goal attempt wide right, forcing the game into overtime.
The Cauldron got a perfect look at the Texas A&M bench and the players' range of emotions as Bertolet's attempt soared wide of the post:
It was a battle of the Allens (no relation) at the quarterback position Saturday night that brought the game to its climactic ending.
Both had solid, efficient nights, as Arkansas' Brandon Allen went 20-of-25 for 225 yards, while A&M's Kyle Allen was 21-of-28 for 372 yards.
The first quarter belonged to Arkansas. Well, one drive from Arkansas. The Razorbacks put together their most methodical drive of the season, an 11-play, 86-yard march that culminated with Brandon Allen hitting Drew Morgan for a 17-yard touchdown.
Arkansas shared the replay:
Texas A&M didn't wait long to answer. Just 1:20 later, the Aggies went 98 yards on four plays thanks to two straight big pass plays. First, Kyle Allen hit Josh Reynolds for 36 yards and then hit Kirk for a 44-yard touchdown.
ESPN College Football took a look at Kirk's touchdown:
A&M tacked on a field goal thanks to a 57-yard reception from Kirk to go into halftime with a three-point lead.
The Aggies put long drives together, but they couldn't find the end zone, adding another field goal to extend their advantage to six after a 14-play, 65-yard drive.
But Arkansas made them pay on the next possession, as Collins capped off a 77-yard drive with a four-yard rushing touchdown during which he demonstrated a nifty spin move. ESPN's Gerry Hamilton liked the move as well:
Collins was a workhorse for Arkansas, gaining 151 yards on the night. This is the third consecutive season in which Collins has recorded over 100 yards against Texas A&M.
Playing at the home of the Dallas Cowboys, Collins may have impressed the NFL team's owner, as Bleacher Report's Matt Miller speculated:
While Collins was getting the job done on the ground, Morgan, who caught the Razorbacks' first touchdown, was trying not to be outdone by A&M's Kirk, putting up a big day of eight catches for 155 yards. A 38-yard catch and run by Morgan set up Arkansas' touchdown to start the fourth quarter, a Rawleigh Williams three-yard rush up the middle to put the Razorbacks up 21-13.
After having scored just 13 points, it was not looking good for Texas A&M even before the Arkansas scoring drive, as ESPN Stats & Info pointed out:
The offense couldn't do a thing in the fourth for the first 11:30, but it finally sprang to life after Kyle Allen hit Reynolds for a 63-yard pass to put A&M at the 7-yard line.
After a pass-interference penalty put the Aggies on the 2-yard line, Tra Carson punched it in on a handoff to bring them within two points with 2:50 left. They managed to tie it up on the two-point conversion, when Allen hit Reynolds on a fade.
This was the second straight season in which Texas A&M has defeated Arkansas in overtime. The Aggies also won at AT&T Stadium last year, and this matchup has proved again and again that it is one of the most entertaining on the schedule.
And to think this was just the opening game of conference play for these teams. If this game suggests anything, the SEC season is going to be one heck of a roller-coaster ride.
